It’s one of the most beautiful scenic golf courses in the UK and will be such a loss as a community asset especially with other sports now being detrimented due to the pandemic

Matthew Williams (cheltenham, 2020-09-26)

#2003

We must not underestimate the importance of Cleeve Hill to those new the the game. It's open fairways are forgiving and the cost of golf is well priced for those beginning their golf journey.

Cleeve Hill is a golfing institution and every effort should be made to keep it open and creativity is required to find a solution that works for all.

If this is not achieved, it will be a very sad day for the golfing community across several counties.

Ian Plumpton (Cheltenham, 2020-09-26)

#2004

It will be tragic to lose such a natural and historic course that has given so much to so many.

wayne vincent (Cheltenham, 2020-09-26)

This was where I learned to play golf in a beautiful setting. Can't think of anywhere that matches the views from 17th tee...the cold foggy mornings on the first tee waiting for your ball to be in the front of the chute..Dave Finch and his dodgy sense of humour!! If this course closes it would be a travesty! Golf courses are experiencing better times, post COVID. Market the course and capitalise on the surge in interest, dont take away another facility!

Craig Furlong (Aylesbury, 2020-09-26)

I have many great memories at cleeve Hill when I first started playing golf and hopefully my son will also

It would be incredibly sad to lose such a beautiful and unique course. So many people have such strong connections and fond memories of learning to play at this challenging and accessible course. We should all feel the obligation and responsibility to protect this special place.

It’s a travesty to close it.

Tom Bainbridge (Cheltenham, 2020-09-26)

These historic courses need to be saved for current and future players. Everyone starts on pay and play courses and it would be a huge loss for this course to close. My son the current English county champion of champions started playing on our local municipal and it certainly gave him a good grounding in the game and it’s etiquette.

Nicholas Burden (Portsmouth , 2020-09-26)

#2029

Because it’s a beautiful golf course that I play regularly and as a poor golfer it’s a course I feel I can play and be welcome.

Duncan Wilde (Manchester, 2020-09-26)

I am signing because I am a golfer here in Scotland and the game has given me many many hours of time to myself when my depression was at its worst without the game I don't know how I would have coped everyone deserves the chances I got. Golf has saved many lives.

#2061

we need to save this historic golf course.

Jon Ramsey (Dorking, 2020-09-26)

#2062

This course needs to be retained for universal use. It is one of the unique inland links courses in the country and needs to be developed into a better course and club house rather than shut. This will enhance the locality for perpetuity and in turn enable the intrinsic qualities of the special site to be protected and developed better at the same time

Paula smith (Cheltenham, 2020-09-26)

#2063

Being Scottish I'd hate to see an Old Tom Morris course going to the wall.
Hope with all my heart that this iconic course survives. All the very best for the future?????
I live in Formby, Merseyside and if it were not for Covid19 I and a few of my golf club mates would love to come down to help support your cause.
Regards Chris Millar,
Southport & Ainsdale Golf Club.

Chris Millar (Formby, 2020-09-26)

I have played this course a lot when in Cheltenham I think it’s important it stays open for affordable golf for all

Phil Griffin (Verwood, 2020-09-26)

Cleeve Hill golf course is perfect and I want everyone to be able to continue to enjoy both it and the clubhouse facilities. It really is special.

It is unimaginable that a golf course of such beauty and history would eve4n be considered to close down. Any course designed by Old Tom Morris should be an absolute sacred piece of art and a treasure for generations to enjoy.
Golf is at an early stage of a renaissance and just because there may be a financial rough patch does not mean the same course cannot thrive in a short while if the right practices are put into place. I group of us in Oceanside California were in the same predicament with our local public course which had been around since 1952 (not quite 1891 but by American standards that is an old course). The same thing was happening, it was 2009 and California was in a drought situation so water cost was a huge factor, we were in the midst of a recession and the course was losing money. Even though this particular land was zoned to be public recreation use through a municipality (unless it were to go to a vote of the people to be over changed) the local council determined that the land should be developed for commercial use and put out a RFP (request for proposal) Many developers came forward with plans to build strip malls and condos. Our group came forward with a benevolent plan to 'SAVE GOAT HILL PARK' fix it up, put in a new3 irrigation system using reclaim water and also put in a lot of love. We took it over July 1st 2014, the first two years we lost some money but were able to withstand the deficit the next 2 years we broke even and the past two years we've been in the black with rounds increasing every year. And every year we continue to improve the course, facility and experience where we are able. It has been a labor of love but I cannot think off anything more rewarding in this day and age than to give back to the community in the form of an outdoor recreation that serves as an escape from the social media onslaught that is crippling the world in from of our very eyes. Golf needs to be available for all generations to have a common ground for socializing in nature and at the forefront of social change. The Cleeve Hill Golf Course needs to be saved! Has anyone contacted the R&A? I wouldn't think they could stand by and watch an Old Tom Morris deigned golf course go by the wayside...Blows my mind! Anyway I can help I will, actually been there done that. Good luck and keep me posted

John Ashworth (Carlsbad, 2020-09-26)

#2075

I'm signing because I love the great game of golf, especially the history and the wonderful courses designed years ago by famed golf course architects that need to be preserved....just like any other great American treasure!

This is golfing history and deserves more tribute than many lesser causes that seem to gather favour! Come on guys save this heritage! Sir Percy

James Phillips (Trowbridge, 2020-09-27)

Because I believe affordable golf is important to our Commonwealth's culture. I would love to play Cleeve Hill on my next visit to the United Kingdom. I hope city council realizes they have a gem that people would fly over an ocean to come and play!

Cleeve Hill Golf Course has been a large part of Cheltenham heritage for many years. The idea of no more golf being played there is unthinkable.

Important to maintain existence of municipal courses to enable access for all & memories of many rounds on Cleeve Hill whilst at College in Cheltenham in the '80s

#2090

I’ve managed to play the course twice, one of those times was in late August when I rained solidly for 2 days, however, I still managed to have one of the best golf experiences of my live.
I’ve played over 200 courses around the world and Cleve Cloud is in my top 5. It’s spectacular and I’d hate it to close.

David Beatts (London, 2020-09-27)

This is an iconic course and gives affordable golf to many in an amazing location. Designed by one of the greatest architects ever and a “listed building” of the game of golf. It’d be tragic to close it.

Norman Scott (Uttoxeter, 2020-09-28)

#2124

This is dreadful decision to destroy a unique piece of golf history. The council should be ashamed of themselves, but as always politicians never understand the public and make arbitrary choices rather then morally correct ones.

Ealph Mclean (Weyhe, 2020-09-28)

#2127

An amazing facility called by a top golf magazine one of the best island links courses in the country should not be lost.

Please, please keep the course open for present and future golfers to use.

Naomi Griggs (Bristol, 2020-09-28)

The existing clubhouse has such period character and is a monument to the spirit and history of Cleeve Hill.
And I'm not even a golfer - have just enjoyed the ambience and facilities of the clubhouse which is a favourite with GE Aviation staff for celebrating successes, retirements or just the end of the working week!

Michael Glenny (Cheltenham, 2020-09-28)

#2143

I play here regularly, it makes golf accessible to many with an amazing setting.

Gareth Evans (Cheltenham , 2020-09-28)

This is an iconic golf course enjoyed by golfers and general public with breathtaking views

Andrew Harrison (Worcester, 2020-09-29)

#2151

I'm signing because the loss of Cleeve Hill Golf will endanger the upkeep of Cleeve Common as a whole, deprive local folk of affordable golf. The Tewkesbury BC met privately to decide this with no consultation, simply on the sayso of the current tenant. Difficult to believe they have not made plans for the future of this unique site. So what are they ?

Adrian Ham (Cheltenham, 2020-09-29)

#2153

I am signing because I want this unique course to continue, golf is a great sport and this is a fabulous resource to have in this country

#2156

Because it’s a fantastic course and it would be a shame to see it go.

David Humphreys (Worcester, 2020-09-29)

#2157

Cleeve Hill is a historic golf course with the potential to serve both local and international golfers with easily accessible and affordable golf of architectural significance. In other countries such diverse and inspiring golf courses do not exist and where they do, they are highly exclusive and/or expensive. Cleeve Hill is a bastion for the kind of accessible yet highly inspiring golf which makes the UK golf landscape the very best in the world. To lose Cleeve Hill would not only be a blow to the people of Cheltenham and the architectural community, it would also be a huge step backwards in the movement to ensure quality golf course architecture can be accessed and enjoyed by all.

Harry Cloke (London, 2020-09-29)

#2159

I have played at this wonderful old course for over 30 years now.
It is a fantastic, welcoming and stunning course that is enjoyed by every type of person and golfer with no pretensions and is always friendly and welcoming.
It would be a tragedy to lose it and the lovely old club house.

Cleeve Hill Golf Club (the course) is a truly unique place to play golf, where 99% of the course is natural with no artificial hazards that shouldn't be on the course. It's an incredibly beautiful place to play golf, a testament to how golf should be, you vs Mother Nature.

Paul Flood (Worcester , 2020-09-30)
