Cleeve Hill Golf Course is one of the very best. It is a top 100 UK golf course and is steeped in history.

Dean Snuggs says something very important, that many thousands of golfers would have started out at Cleeve Hill and the very special experience of playing here leaves memories and a fondness that other golf courses cannot match.

Cleeve Hill is municipal and at the same time provides an incredible golfing experience in an outstanding setting. This makes Cleeve Hill Golf Course unique and this is something that should be embraced.

I urge the council to support Cleeve Hill Golf Course and all the thousands of people locally who love and value it.

As a junior golfer in the 80's Cleeve Hill welcomed me and developed my love and appreciation of the game. This at a time when other clubs were stuffy and superior. Cleeve Hill has retained this accessibility throughout the years, catering for all strata of society.

Tewkesbury Borough Council should see this opportunity for community provision as a strong asset in its armoury, and with the help of all those passionate about golf on Cleeve Hill, myself included, we must find a way to enable the golf course, and the golf club, to continue.

Cleeve Hill Golf Course is an absolute gem.

Regular user (not member). It provides recreational sport to many, young and old. Gloucs has few courses with such easy access. Part of Cheltenham heritage.

This is a unique golf course, one would class it like "a Inland Links Course". Very challenging with beautiful views.
For the amount of actual land that the course takes up in comparison with the rest of the hill, is negligible.

David Matthews (Cheltenham, 2020-09-22)

#1822

The golf course is a community building that has hosted workshops for my children over the years. They have gained valuable knowledge from these and the site is treasured by locals. To have a new building/houses there would ruin the natural beauty of the hill. The gulf club is a valuable asset to people who use it for family dining.

S Cowling (Cheltenham, 2020-09-22)

I see no benefit in turning it back to nature? Golfers don’t do any harm

To wipe out 120 years of history of golf in the borough is disgraceful.

I have played golf on the common for nearly 50yrs and would be really disappointed if it closed. Golfers have mixed with the general public quite successfully for over 100yrs

It’s a great course with fantastic views..we need to save it.

Kevin Nicholson (Bristol, 2020-09-22)

I am signing as I was a member there and when we built Sherdons Golf Centre we always maintained a friendly working relationship with the Club. It is a grand course with fine views and challenging terrain. It will be such a loss to the Community as the Golf Club did so much to maintain the facilities, and the quality of the maintenance of the parkland.

I play a lot of courses around Gloucestershire and Cleeve Hill is my favourite. It is a great course for beginners and more experienced players. Not should not be lost.

Keith Hanson (Cheltenham , 2020-09-22)

We are signing because we have played golf in Gloucestershire for over 50 years. Playing golf on Cleeve Hill golf course has been a unique and irreplaceable experience for golfers of all abilities. Please think again.

I fully support Cleve Cloud's attempts to keep their golf course open. With its stunning views, its history dating back to the 19th Century, and the opportunities it offers to novice golfers to take up the sport (especially in these fraught times), I feel that all golfers recognize the importance of this course to all residents of Gloucestershire.

Adrian Chandler (Wickwar, 2020-09-22)

As a former captain of Gloucester Golf Club I have played Cleeve a number of times and enjoyed the unique challage it presented particularly when it was blowing a gale.

It's a great course stacked with history

Gareth Jenkins (Swansea, 2020-09-23)

#1848

This is such a historic club house & course which provides a valuable service not only to its members but to the wider local community as well. Sadly municipal golf courses such Cleeve Cloud are becoming a rarity & it's great that this facility is open to all. My own children learned to play their first games of golf on Cleeve Hill & thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The golf club & course also attracts a wide range of visitors from all over the country & internationally. This wonderful & unique facility deserves investment to secure its future.

Catherine Herbert (Winchcombe, 2020-09-23)

#1853

This is a vital community facility. Many golfers first experience of golf is on a publicly owned course. Keeping Municipal courses open is essential to encourage future generations of golfers and those that are unable to afford private golf club memberships.

I am signing here because the area needs a course like this. It was fabulous for me to learn the game there and it should be cherished as a valuable leisure asset for the county.

Stephen Boyle (Hereford, 2020-09-23)

#1862

It’s the most relaxed, and accessible course in the area. The only course I can take my kids to play for a reasonable price. It’s also a unique challenge. There isn’t another course like it !

-Find it hard to believe it’s not financially viable as it must be one of the cheaper courses to maintain.
- Unique historic course that should definitely be maintained
- outdoor activities should be on the increase in current times and certainly not going the other way.

Chris Trott (Carlsbad, 2020-09-24)

Cleeve Hill is a unique and extremely special place to play golf; it’s value to the game and the community only enhanced by remaining a municipal. Golf in the Clouds is one of the most memorable golf experiences in the country - one that is good for the soul.

Nick Anderson (Cheltenham , 2020-09-24)

I used to be amber many years ago it a great course

James Redpath (Beccles, 2020-09-24)

#1888

I spent a very happy 6 years in Cheltenham during the 70s. In those days I didn’t play golf but was very much aware of Cleve Hill Golf Course. The course is a small piece of social history and provides recreation, camaraderie and exercise for both members and visitors alike. With golf enjoying a renaissance it would be a travesty to close a golf course that has provided enjoyment for generations over 125 years.

Keith Howlett (Cambridge, 2020-09-24)

#1889

This golf course is of historic importance and should continue to provide golf in a raw form to be enjoyed by all

Andy Lapsley (Birmingham , 2020-09-24)

#1890

I have not yet made it to Cleeve Hill, but the things I have read and seen are enough to make me realize it is a special treasure in golf. Between the long history, its architectural ties to the Game’s greatest designers, the completely natural and stunningly beautiful layout, the incredible setting, and the sustainable maintenance practice of integration with grazing animals, Cleeve Hill is the exact type of golf course we need more of in the world, not less. Golf at its heart is a natural game, and Cleeve Hill is one of the few places that still embodies that. Please reconsider saving this global golf treasure. It is a model from which all should follow. —Brett Hochstein

I'm signing because this sort of accessible golf is unique to Britain and should be preserved at all costs. The Council is utterly philistine with this development. The course should be saved.

David Middleton (Bromsgrove, 2020-09-25)

#1918

I am signing this petition because golf is an important part of our culture, and a sustainable way for people to engage the environment. This old course is so much more than a place to whack a little ball around, it is a landscape that shows the scars of prior human uses, and provides an engaging route for an exploration through time and space.

Robert Nelson (Pinehurst, 2020-09-25)

#1920

A course Tom Doak (Recognised as one of the current day’s great architects and critics) rates a 7 - making it one of the best and most interesting in Britain - at £15 a round is far too important to lose to the game, the county and the country.

Love golf on the hill when back home visiting parents. Good value and great fun. Devastated it may no longer be an option. Save the golf course 🙏⛳️

#1927

I'm signing because I started my golf on the hill and it was a great course to play. It is a very unique course and it would be a tragedy to lose it. It is the only course in the area where anybody can turn up and play. I still play the course when I can

Colin Frewin (Cheltenham, 2020-09-25)

#1930

I don't think the club should be closed, in fact I think the council should be investing more to maintain the green space rather than profiteering {which is what this will ultimately become....sold for housing etc etc}

Richard Lowe (Cheltenham, 2020-09-25)

#1931

I have visited this area and Cleeve Hill in the past. It is simply stunning. The course itself has so much history. I think the course can be made viable by simply raising the fees. Who would not be willing to pay more for playing a Old Tom Morris-course?

Mark van Os (Lochem, 2020-09-25)

#1933

I played the golf course and thoroughly enjoyed it. At a time when other sports are being curtailed because of Covid golf is booming and Cleeve Hill should be allowed to benefit from that.

David Hunt (Worcester , 2020-09-25)

#1936

I am signing because this is where I learned to play golf (with Pete Barry, Ed Prest and John Davis - the last two were close school friends of mine) and it is also where my Dad's ashes are scattered - alongside the old 8th green (the only time he was on in regulation some say). I brought a load of friends to the course a few years ago and we had a wonderful, albeit very wet, day out.

Besides beautiful course; it is also inexpensive and therefore available to people who love to play golf but generally cannot afford the high fees of a private club. The old saying of : knowing the price of everything and the value of nothing " seems to apply this lamentable decision.

I’ve been playing golf at Cleeve Hill ever since my Dad taught me and my brother to play as kids. It is one of our favourite golf courses to play in the country let alone in Gloucestershire. So many fond memories. My cousin started his professional golf career there too. With such a long history of providing joy to so many people it would be a huge loss to the local and wider community if this golf course was lost. Courses like this that help promote health and well-being should be supported and not closed down. It is a shameful decision to close the course and hopefully some sense will be seen!!!
