We demand a full public inquiry into the Met police following the murder of Sarah Everard

The kidnap, rape and murder of Sarah Everard by a serving Met police officer has sent shock waves through communities in the UK. Subsequent details revealing that he was called 'the rapist' by work colleagues; was known to watch violent pornography; and had exposed himself just days before the brutal attack have only served to further terrify the public, particularly women and girls. Yet so far the Met's response has been, at best, woefully inadequate. We need a full public inquiry to answer the following questions: how was this person recruited as a police officer? What was the vetting procedure and why has it proved to be so inadequate? Why were the warning signs ignored? Is there a culture of misogyny within the Met police? And crucially, what steps are needed to ensure something like this never happens again and trust can begin to be rebuilt? Sarah's memory deserves nothing less than fundamental change, based on evidence and analysis.
