The planning application has been made at a time when it is impossible to hold a public consultation making it difficult for local residents to share their views.
The area proposed for the build is one of great natural beauty and an asset to the village. A housing estate would have a detrimental impact on this as well as adding to traffic accessing the A68.

I am totally against this proposal. I do not think the site is suitable for housing because of its exposure to the elements, any buildings erected will have a negative impact on an area that is right next to the AONB, and the site is on the border of a listed site of historical interest

The field forms part of the open aspect across an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and an Area of High Landscape Valley toward the Derwent Reservoir beyond. It is the first impression of the village as you enter from Rowley on A68. Any development of the field would be detrimental to the spectacular views, and be a significant loss of open countryside, on land used by foxes, rabbits, kestrels and our rare red kites . It is the most splendid view in the village, and I feel very strongly about the potential loss of this field, it is used by everyone in the village to the north and south having a right of way and a further unregistered right of way used for generations.
This just cannot happen to our beautiful greenfield site!

This development is not required. There are already 4 planning applications approved or pending in the village that I can think of....smelters, horse and groom, drover road, field below wesley terrace...oh and the old moorside pub. When is it going to stop....or are the planners just going to let it go on and on till we are no longer a village with no green land or space or wildlife and countryside. It needs to stop NOW....can you tell I'm passionate about this...I AM.
AND.....I wasnt aware that there are NO bungalows in Castleside....I'm sure there are 7 on watergate road alone...total untruth

The view as you enter the village on the A68 still takes my breath away. Building houses on the land would entirely change the aesthetics of the village, a village that is already growing at an alarming rate. The land forms a natural border to the village and at times like this it must be appreciated that there is still open countryside surrounding the village. We have now so seen the effects of encroaching onto wildlife territory, give the next generation of Castleside the same opportunities to grow up experiencing the wildlife and beautiful countryside around.

I live on Drover Road in Castleside and the amount of traffic that use Drover Road as a short cut from the A68 to Consett Road is ridiculous. It can take me 5-10 minutes to get out of my drive in the mornings. Cars speed down this road and given that its used by school children and there way to and from Castleside Primary School and elderly people using the Village Hall, I don’t know how someone hasn’t been seriously injured or killed. Our dog was knocked down and killed by a driver who didn’t even bother to stop. If the Watergate project goes ahead I can see even more traffic using Drover Road as a short cut and will be even worse if the additional houses that are planned on Drover Road go ahead. Castleside is a beautiful village and would be a shame to spoil it for someone’s financial gain. We don’t need more houses and increased traffic.

The proposed development will have a very bad/negative/disruptive effect on the surrounding area of AONB. The majority of responsible people in the village do not want this. For the applicant and his wife to be in place on the parish council is surely a conflict of interest!
It smacks of going back to the old local ways of labour party "Skullduggery".

I'm signing this Petition as a resident living on Drover Road, Castleside. I fear that should this development go ahead, then the increased amount of traffic on Drover Road would be problematic. The amount of traffic using Drover Road as a short cut from the A68 at Rowley to join the A692 to Consett and visa versa is already substantial. This includes cars aswell as commercial heavy vehicles. The speed of drivers using Drover Road as a shortcut is well above the 30 MPH restriction. The road is used regularly by pedestrians including young children and families accessing the route through Castleside Primary School field on their way to and from School. The Village Hall is also used by a wide range of people, including young children using the play park, children attending social events, as well as elderly residents attending events. Cars are parked regularly on either side of the road blocking visual access to drivers speeding whilst taking their short cut. As a family, one of our dogs was hit by speeding car and killed at the end of our drive. The driver didn't event bother to stop, despite seeing the dog and my son. My husband, myself and my son have all had our car wing-mirrors broken by cars speeding past within the last 12 months alone.

I believe that if this project goes ahead, then the amount of speeding traffic using Drover Road will only increase as drivers avoid the additional traffic on the A68 between Rowley and the cross-roads where access to the Watergate Project is planned. Consideration also needs to be taken into account for the proposed additional 33 houses planned for the Waterboard Field also located on Drover Road. It will be only a matter of time before someone is seriously injured or killed if this traffic continues to rise without any speed control or limit to the amount of traffic using the road.

I don't feel that the Village can sustain additional housing with the limited facilities i.e. small Primary School, no Village Shop or Post Office etc., I would question the purpose is that of financial gain rather than the need for additional housing ?

That land is part of the heritage of Castleside and as such should be kept to preserve both the views, scenic landscape and history, which has been unchanged for centuries. Far too many character landsites are being swallowed up at the expense of history and local culture. Castleside as a village has been ruined over the years by the joining up of Moorside, which has a different cultural, historical and religious background..please don't encroach more onto our rural and peaceful vista that is and has been a refreshing outlook to the moors and beyond and turn the village into yet another housing area.

This proposed plan is using precious agricultural land. The local facilities are not sufficent to support another 35 households ie shops, a park, schools and nursery places. The traffic on the main road through the village is used by a lot heavy goods vehicles, tractors and cars etc not observing the speed limit despite a flashing speed check detector. In winter vehicles struggle to come down and up the steep bank due to ice and snow and local residents have to abandon their vehicles down at the cross roads. The proposed opening onto the busy main road is another cause for concern without taking into account the building machinery etc the new build would bring. Why spoil the countryside there a several other places to build we need to keep our villages. Leave our countryside and village alone.

I am strongly against the proposed development which would completely destroy an area of outstanding natural beauty and the habitats of an abundance of wildlife. Castleside was once a small rural village with adequate amenities however fast forward to the present day and we now have many more houses, the population has increased greatly and we have not even a shop! The traffic that runs on the A68 and through the village is constant. More houses means more traffic and more accidents (and I myself have witnessed many accidents at the crossroads over the years), not to mention the opposed opening for the site is just below the brow of a hill. This development would have a detrimental effect on the village as a whole.
