Justice for Maya
On November 9, 2025, in the Sofia neighborhood of “Rassadnika,” a horrifying act of violence was committed, resulting in the death of Maya — a calm, friendly, and beloved dog. This tragic event has deeply shaken us and raises an urgent question: how many more such incidents must occur before the state takes real action against cruelty to animals?
We, the citizens of the Republic of Bulgaria, express our strong disapproval of all acts of violence against animals and call on the institutions to:
1.Conduct a full, impartial, and transparent investigation into the case of Maya.
2.Ensure the effective enforcement of Article 325b of the Criminal Code, which provides penalties for cruelty to animals.
3.Introduce legislative changes that increase accountability and sanctions for deliberate acts leading to the death or suffering of animals.
4.Organize national awareness and education campaigns promoting humane treatment of animals.
We believe that animals are living beings who deserve protection, care, and respect.
Violence against them is not only a crime under the law but also a moral boundary that must never be crossed.
By signing this petition, we declare our demand for justice — for Maya and for all animals who cannot defend themselves.
We urge the responsible institutions to take concrete action and to show that in Bulgaria there is no place for impunity or cruelty.
