I,m signing as I want the Robert Mcdougall art gallery to be used as was intended when it was gifted to the city of Christchurch, an Art Gallery.

Ross Williamson (Christchurch, 2022-12-20)

#213

This was a place I loved to visit, prior to the earthquakes, and I think it is a great shame that this wonderful collection of historic art is no longer displayed.

Pamela Brathwaite (CHRISTCHURCH, 2022-12-20)

#214

I’m signing this petition because I also believe very strongly that the Robert McDougall Art Gallery which was purpose built to house art, should be retained exclusively as originally intended and continue to house the city’s historic art collection .

Steve Hutchison (Christchurch , 2022-12-20)

Carl Streeter (Nottingham , 2022-12-20)

This space should be used as intended for the type art that is available and suitable for such a space.

Andrew Mattingly (Cambridge , 2022-12-21)

#228

This museum affected me powerfully as a child, and btw the Bovington Tank Museum U.K asked me about Scott’s Wolseley tracked vehicle some years ago.
I believe they’d very much like to exhibit it.
Best of luck.
Greg Jacques.

Gregory Cotter (Lismore , 2022-12-23)

#229

I support the views outlined in this petition regarding the Robert MacDougall Art Gallery and the public collection of art that never sees the light of day.

Dannie Armstrong (Woodend, 2022-12-26)

#231

Totally agree with the stated points of petition

Sue Hollobon (Christchurch, 2023-01-01)

#232

This is an incredibly unique building with heritage significance. One that leaves a lasting impression. The art deserves a home that suits the era, and this building is perfect. Christchurch has lost too many heritage buildings to leave this closed. It should be used as the gifter intended, as soon as possible. The doors have been closed too long.

Tamsin Bobby (CHRISTCHURCH , 2023-01-01)

#233

I would like it to see it remain an art exhibition space.

Jacob Cameron (Christchurch, 2023-01-01)

#243

I believe we should value the gift that was given to the city of the building.. AND display the heritage art where it can be easily seen.

Faye Broughton (Rangiira, 2023-01-01)

Alex HT (Christchurch, 2023-01-01)

So much art

Lynne Grafton (Christchurch, 2023-01-01)

#253

Such a beautiful building gifted to the city of Christchurch by a very generous benefactor needs to be retained for its original purpose as a museum of Historical Art.

Karen Thorpe (Rangiora, 2023-01-01)

#254

The RMAG is a significant and historic landmark building of Christchurch well worth retaining for future generations to enjoy. Fantastic and calming elements of design to house and display art was always a delight of the RMAG which should be continued.

Nicholas Cowie (Governors Bay, 2023-01-01)

#255

The city needs to honour the promises it has made historically to public and donors.

Maggie Reid (Elsternwick, 2023-01-01)

#260

This is an important building with a purpose and history. This purpose is still relevant into our future.

Gendi Te Keepa (Christchurch, 2023-01-01)

#266

I have the fondest memories of these beautiful museum. I also strongly believe that in giving such a generous gift to the people of Christchurch R McDougalls wishes should be honoured.

Kylie Edwards (Papanui, 2023-01-02)

#267

I think the McDougall is such a beautiful building and I can't understand why it is not being used for the Christchurch collection. Such a shame that it has been sitting there unused and wasting for 20 years now. Why is NZ so behind the 8ball about this sort of thing?

Marilyn Rea-Menzies (Westport, 2023-01-02)

#268

This lovely building is part of our heritage. We have art stored because there isn't space to display it. Sounds like a great solution, and one that doesn't need to cost millions.

Julie Adam (Christchurch , 2023-01-02)

#271

I want to

Gary Lynn (Christchurch, 2023-01-02)

#275

This is a landmark building that holds significant value, history and meaning to the people of Christchurch and Canterbury.

Alice Groves (Christchurch, 2023-01-02)

#276

Where a gift is made with conditions as to its use then the gift can only be used in accordance with the gift conditions. The McDougall is a beautiful building and needs to be restored to its stated purpose without interference from any local or national government.

Karen Feltham (Christchurch, 2023-01-02)

#277

We need to keep this historic building!!

Liz Knight (Christchurch, 2023-01-02)

#278

I am signing as my family miss visiting the McDougall which has been off limits for too long. To have it house historic art would be the best outcome.

Vicky Jones (Christchurch, 2023-01-02)

History is vital

Ruth Surtees (Christchurch, 2023-01-02)

#289

This is an important building for Christchurch

Dianne Harker (Christchurch , 2023-01-02)

#292

I have lived almost all my in Christchurch where I was born in 1943. As a person keen on fine art I visited the McDougall regularly and remember many very excellent exhibitions there. It can still be that place. We have many Kiwi artists that do not get the exposure they should and this maybe could be a place for them. It is also important to keep heritage buildings.

Pip Kelly (Motueka, 2023-01-02)

#293

The McDougall has historic associations with the city and its historic art collection.

Evin Wood (Blenheim, 2023-01-02)

#300

I have always adored this building from the outside and wanted to see what it holds inside

Karalee Connell (Christchurch , 2023-01-02)

#307

We have so little historical architecture left in Christchurch and the council should honour the original intention of the donor.

Lynne Clark (Christchurch, 2023-01-02)

#308

I want to.save the McDougall

Nick Anderson (Wellington, 2023-01-02)

#310

I believe the McDougall should remain and be respected as a significant historical site, including all art works.

Julia Anderson (Christchurch, 2023-01-02)

#311

We lost enough significant buildings in the earthquake. Why are we considering voluntarily demolishing more, and losing even more of our heritage?
I remember visiting the gallery with my Nana back in the 70s during school holidays - probably didn't really appreciate it at the time

Paul MacMillan (Bristol, 2023-01-02)

#312

I support this petition, and am horrified at the utter negligence of the chch City Council for not displaying old historical works of art, and what they are doing with OUR building. Put the old artwork back in and open it up!

Karen Bennett (Christchurch, 2023-01-02)

#317

It's our cultural heritage

Adrian Harrison (Christchurch, 2023-01-02)

#319

I want to see this building used for its intended purpose

Liz Carter (Duvauchelle, 2023-01-02)

#321

we have lost so much of our beautiful buildings in Christchurch
And I would quite often walk through the art gallery when I was younger and use to be amazed at the paintings on the walls

jeffrey gibson (christchurch, 2023-01-02)

#323

Having first been driven there from a small country town by my mother as a small child, I thought we were in a church, too small to see or notice the treasure in the frames but hugely respectful of the space inside this magnificent building and where my feet landed, and how, so as to make no noise lest it be echoed in the heavens, forcing Mum to give me "that look". This was my cathedral til I learned there was another.
I spent many hours and days after-school in the 80's lovingly staring at every brushstroke and layer of hue, transported to a world between the canvas and paint and the artists mind... I fell into this land of goose bumps and wide eyed wonder. Yes these Olympians of Art validated my lonely thoughts and have been a huge influence on why I call myself an Artist today.
I fear a 5 year remodel, what needs to be changed that takes 5 long years ?! I can only imagine the monstrosity that will be created. Attaching the McDougall to the Canterbury Museum is a terrible idea. May as well put a McDonald's in there too for all the tourists. Shame on the CCC! Where has my Cathedral gone?!

Sally-Jane Peterson (Christchurch, 2023-01-02)

#326

The building is an important historical place to retain and I believe there are the right people in chch who can do this and the audience and finance to support it's continued operation.

Chloe Geoghegan (Queenstown, 2023-01-03)

#331

This building was a key part of my introduction to the arts as a young woman. Its spaces are well suited to intimate exhibitions and its retention would support the ability of our residents to access art, making it more ubiquitous.

learne mcarthur (christchurch, 2023-01-03)

#332

This building was bequeathed to the residents of Christchurch, to be used as an art gallery.

Marissa Kelly (Christchurch , 2023-01-03)

#333

Because I value what little heritage we have left.

Carlton Duston (Christchurch , 2023-01-03)

#335

We really need to be able to see our historic art currently in storage and the McDougall art gallery is the perfect location and why it was gifted to the city.

Lynette Peebles (Christchurch , 2023-01-03)

#336

Im signing because the McDougal belongs to the people of Christchurch, not to make money, but to display the beautiful artworks now kept in storage.

Evie Walker (Christchurch, 2023-01-03)

#338

I am an ex Christchurch resident and loved this building and feel it should not be demolished as it was given to the people of Christchurch

David Jackson (Brisbane , 2023-01-04)

#339

This is a valuable part of the history and art community in NZ and deserves to be preserved.

Ingrid Harrison (Auckland , 2023-01-04)

#340

This is a beautiful heritage building which won't take much to bring up to standard. We have lost far too much already. The cathedral has taken too much time and money. Surely we can save one beautiful building. Secondary school art exhibitions is one use that comes to mind

Liz Philbrick (Christchurch , 2023-01-04)

#344

It is an amazing building and needs using to show historical works of the region. Not everyone wants to see contemporary art.
Great resource.

Margaret Cable (Nelson, 2023-01-04)

#345

It is very important that this beautiful art gallery is retained for the purpose McDougall gifted it. People should be able to view the wonderful historical collection in this appropriate setting.

Margaret Hopkins (Oban, Stewart Island, NZ, 2023-01-04)

#347

This is a valuable art space for the city and must be saved

Felicity Robertson (Chch, 2023-01-04)

#349

I believe the building needs to be saved but more importantly used and loved. I remember going in when coming to Christchurch as a child and adult and how impressive the building was.

Personally I have a deep attachment to
'The McDougall'. As a 16 year old working class lad I wandered in one day, and, as we now say 'I was blown away'. This was my first exposure to art, both mainstream, classic and modern plus contemporary. This exposure over weekly visits was a foundational element in the transformational forces and events which changed my life, and opened doors I didn't even know existed. Each step along the way I can trace back to the McDougall. From theatre making and set design, to formal Art History studies and to my own decorative, theatrical and fine art practices. The McDougall is the foundation, not only of my experiences but also many others. Call this nostalgia but it cannot be denied that this art gallery has a place in the hearts and minds of many. Nostalgia is palpable in Christchurch since the time of the earthquakes and will remain so for decades to come. Christchurch has lost so much valued heritage, grace and visual memory, why sacrifice more? Why did citizens fight to save Christchurch Cathedral when the owners couldn't be bothered, and yet citizens are being insulted and put upon with replacement buildings lacking good design, and are having mediocre architecture foisted upon them. Please take pause in your considerations and deliberations, Christchurch has lost much more than it's built environment, her heart and soul have been wrenched and put upon, please do not add insult to injury by what may seem expedient now, for what you risk is the very thing you must fight to save...another building that was constructed with a clear intent and during the following decades each time this grand dame opened her doors, this intent - this heart and soul was offered gratis to the citizens, not just of Christchurch but to the nation. In this she has always fully committed to the life of the city and to the wellbeing and benefit of the people. Why rebuild a Cathedral? because not to is to deny the beating heart and to insult the wounded soul. The Robert McDougall Art Gallery deserves no less.

Signing because we have lost so many of our historic buildings and the collection housed here deserves to be shown in the space they were donated and purchased for. Demolition would be unnecessary destruction

A history museum works well in this precinct.

This is a fabulous building and should be saved to show case the paintings

Jill Watts (Christchurch , 2023-01-07)

I strongly believe the bequest by Robert McDougall must be honoured. It is a lovely old building and eminently suited to displaying works of art donated by others in the past.

Patricia Carswell (Christchurch , 2023-01-07)

#364

I'm signing because the gallery and its collection is a heritage icon and keeping it as a museum of art not only meets the terms of the gift but will also benefit locals, visitors and the cultural tourism attraction of the city.

Colin Hall (Christchurch, 2023-01-07)

#365

Asti Renaut (Christchurch, 2023-01-07)

#371

I believe the McDougall Art Gallery should be restored and reinstated as the McDougall Museum of Art.
Also the acoustics and visual beauty in the atrium also is a wonderful area for musical performance, having experienced many there in past years.

Judith Hart (Christchurch, 2023-01-07)

#378

Beautiful heritage building that is part of my childhood. The art gallery in our beautiful gardens and was free for poor families- lovely family outing.

Susan Stewart (Christchurch , 2023-01-07)

#380

Christchurch needs somewhere for our historical art to be displayed - a vasement is not good enough. We are severely lacking in art and culture post earthquake.

Teri Findlater (Rolleston, 2023-01-08)

#381

Because the Robert McDougall is part of the cultural heart of our city, I actually can't believe that needs to be spelled out

Peter Malthus (Christchurch , 2023-01-08)

This building was gifted to the city of Christchurch for the display of the city's historic art collection which is stored away and since the new art gallery opened never on view for the public to appreciate!
