We bought this book for our daughter many years ago. We found it a great tool to teach her about the history of our people in this country and we feel it would be a great tool for other parents and educators if it were available.

I brought up four BAME children and longed for this theme to be accessible in a book. Now I want to ensure that my three grandchildren have material that they can relate to and learn from.

As a primary school teacher, I know that we need high-quality non-fiction texts that teach the history of all the communities that make up our country.

Suzanne Williams (York, 2020-06-24)

#610

I'm signing because I believe it is vitally important that children have ready access to literature that will open their minds to anti-racist mental models that will result in the end of racism in our lifetime.

Joel Hooper (London, 2020-06-24)

I'd like to buy this book and would also recommend it to my school

I find it irate to learn that Professor Hakim Adi the author of, 'The History of African and Caribbean Communities in Britain', can not have his book republished. There is no excuse. I have had an experience of not being successful in submitting a history of the Haitian revolution, and the publishers made the same excuse.

David Walter (London, 2020-06-24)

#620

I contributed two photographs to this wonderful book by Dr Hakim Adi. It would be a travesty if Hachette do not reissue this important and valuable resource for children of all backgrounds.

Stephen Bourne (LONDON, 2020-06-24)

Now, even more than ever-support history, support bigger stories, and support financially.

My daughter and I would love this

It is important that everyone is educated about all aspects of history.

As a black person born in the UK I can definitely say there is a major need for these books by Professor Hakim Adi.However I am NOT surprised that yet again a white man has unashamedly held a black man down and are taking money that is rightfully the writers...slavery in its present day form.I will now NOT be buying any books published by Hachett UK as WHITE people should not be allowed to keep getting rich on the blood and sweat of black authors.I would also suggest that the rights of copyright be given back to the authors.THIS DISGUSTING SLAVE TRADER behaviour needs to be WILDLY PUBLICISED to NAME and SHAME and even take legal action against Hachett Uk..Also the token gesture of £20,000 is an INSULT

I’m an educator, and history has been whitewashed for too long.

Bethany Black (Columbus , 2020-06-24)

. .it if critical that the education of Black children and all BME and their British peers learn this history to break the racism from lack of knowledge. Plus Hatchette needs to walk the talk of their verbage on comittment.

History and culture is vital for growth between people. Censoring these important parts of life create power imbalances that many are currently opening their eyes to.

Lucy Jameson (Durham, 2020-06-24)

I believe that the younger generation, whose minds are still forming and not so tainted as adults, should have every opportunity to become more fully informed and widely educated about all of their history.

Merlyn Fagon (Jocotenango , 2020-06-24)

This is a fantastic book and a great opportunity to make a long lasting contribution to this global movement from Hachette's unique position that can support underrepresented and systemically disadvantaged writers by paying them, build young minds, and create a better society in Britain and the world.
Financial contributions are great, but finite, and institutions like publishing companies which are majority white, do need to turn the mirror inwards at this crucial time- systemic inequality does not happen 'out there' but for instance there is a reason why Hachette works with Creative Access to diversify its workforce. I do hope you can show to your BAME interns that their lives matter, by reprinting their histories, and supporting them by having fair access in your company and industry. "There's no demand" is not enough, you have such an amazing opportunity to be proactive, and make lasting change in BAME writer's and the community's lives.

Natalie Cooper (London, 2020-06-24)

Hachette's refusal to release copyright with illustration is beyond disgusting considering you don't even want to re-publish. Your actions are a true representation of oppression and the BLM statement plastered across your website homepage is an embarrassment.

Steph Holder (Reading, 2020-06-24)

Act. Act. Act. Support and re-publish this very important book. Challenge the status quo. We ALL benefit from a variety and choice of books to support our lifelong education.

We must call out this blatant hyprocrisy

Tracey Grant Lee (London, 2020-06-24)

#699

This history cannot be buried because of the false claim there is no 'market' for this book. That is appalling. All prior editions sold out. We want current and future generations to be able to read this important book! And pay authors for their work - what sort of shocking deal would see Hachette profiting but not the person that poured all their hard work and dedication into the book! How do publishing houses get away with this behaviour?

Marie Xenophontos (London, 2020-06-24)

#703

I want this available for classrooms across the nation.

Tegan Dempsey (Tonbridge, 2020-06-24)

I would love my 3 children to have a copy of this book, and I do agree with the letter that was written and the breakdown behind republishing this book the fact that there has to be a petition to republish this book, says everything about the powers that be.

Maxine Grant (London, 2020-06-24)

#720

Amnesia to racism and privildge education (focus on ‘white’ history) is redundand. Thank you to all those who fight for addressing a past and present crime

Philippe Verlinden (London, 2020-06-24)

I’m signing because I am a parent of children and an educator who would benefit from the information in this book. There are few books directed to children with this important history.

Everyone- especially African and Caribbean children- needs to be educated truthfully about Britains history and their identities from a young age, in order to create a healthy balance in education. This corrupt system doesn't work and never will!

It is INTEGRAL that black history be taught to children through child friendly material. It has always been urgent but now unlike at any other time the world seems ready to acknowledge that urgent need.
