Postpone, instead of digitalise the 2020 End of Year Degree Show

A digital version of the degree show is nowhere near as effective nor likely to gain attention from perspective companies.

I am a third year Fine Art student at Leeds Arts University and is extremely unhappy with the cancellation of our degree show and would like it to be postponed to a later date!

I’m signing this petition because I know all of us have been thinking and planning and dreaming of this show for so long, as not only part of the degree experience but a celebration for all of our hard work over the past 3 years. I hope the university can understand that not having the degree show at all completely casts aside any artists that enrolled in 2017. I want to have the opportunity to display my work the way it was planned to be displayed. At these difficult times I completely know that the university is doing the best they can, but I hope by raising this awareness of the potential disappointment and disadvantage this puts on 2020 graduates, they could reconsider to postpone and not cancel. Please sign this petition to allow us to exhibit our show: even if this is postponed indefinitely for now.

How can someone possibly understand the nuances of a painting or see the quality of a brush strokes from a digital photo. Art needs to be seen 'in the flesh".

Students should have the right to a traditional degree ceremony

The degree show is the culmination of all of our hard work that’s been put in through out the 3 years we have been at university. It’s something that we have all looked forward to since starting in 2017. To have a digital submission is understandable in the current situation, but to only have a digital exhibition is disappointing and disheartening. We don’t mind if the end of year exhibition is postponed indefinitely, because without it we miss out on the chance to network with other creatives, to display our work the way we intended, and to show case something we are proud of and would like everyone else to experience.

I would love to see my daughters work when all this coronavirus issue comes to an end. It is not fair when they worked so hard and got in debt for the very thing they was looking forward to.

I believe in the importance of the third year fine art course having a physical degree show

After three hard years, the students miss a VITAL chance to network and consolidate their work.

The degree show was the most important and enjoyable part of my fine art course, to not have it would take away from the point of the course and go against what every student has signed up for.

Work so hard my whole life for my final degree show, to show the world where I stand in the art world. I’ve dreamed off something that will never happen. Gutted doesn’t even describe it. Please re-solitude just not cancel. Fine art 2020

I cannot complete my final year without the facilities, tutor advisement and peer feedback that I have received for the last 2 & 1/2 years. Online sessions aren’t enough - tutor’s don’t reply for hours, sometimes days, peer support is hard to find and I have no print-making facilities without uni. As a final year student, I have been stripped of the support that I need. We have been denied a degree show, in which our work is seen within our professional field and acts as a networking opportunity - meeting people in person is incredibly important in making an impression - this is necessary in order to find a job after we’ve finished. Our £4,000 that we’ve paid for this term as not been used, although we are still being asked to pay. A 2-week extension considering the stress we are put under on-top of the anxiety that Corona Virus is enough to de-motivate anybody. Especially when we talk about the creative subjects that everyone at our uni is a part of. Creative block is something that everyone in the uni struggles with (from time to time) - the university has not allowed for this. We are unlike any other university in this capacity since we work for the arts. Our work is so inspiration-based that I am (very obviously) struggling to do our work within the box room I have in my university home.

I’m signing this petition because as a third year fine art student at LAU I feel that a final show is an integral part of my degree. I feel immensely sad on behalf of myself and my peers at the prospect of not having an opportunity to show off the products of three years of hard work.

Isobel Harper (Leeds, 2020-03-23)

The degree show is an important symbolic/ritual event as well as everything else. Digital platforms lend themselves to certain kinds of work, but for many it is not a substitute for encountering a physical thing.

We need to chance to showcase three years worth of work. Taking this away from us is heartbreaking, unfair and not okay.

Harriet Summers (Leeds, 2020-03-23)

This is an integral part of the student experience and as a former student this is such an important opportunity to showcase your hard work. Postponing it would be sensible because the whole world is in chaos so there is flexibility to postpone stuff like this. Cancelling it is just cruel! Don't disrespect the students that have worked so hard by ruining the one thing they have to look forward to when life returns to normal.

Ethan Carney (Hayle, 2020-03-23)

The idea of having something promised to students that can take away professional opportunities is quite disgusting, please reschedule for them as they have paid so so much money for what they deserve not some pictures of their stuff online!!

Ever since we came back from Christmas break last year our university has put multiple barriers in the way of our education such as physically taking away studio spaces and editing suites from certain courses, and wasting our time as guinea pigs for weeks to try to get Connect2 to work. Matt, our only helpful AV resource was allegedly fired for not taking a drone course, and since his absence students like myself have only had the support of free Youtube tutorials, which surely defeats the point in attending this ridiculous institution. Staff have no clue, not their fault, but we pay an appalling amount of money in tuition fees to be put at such a disadvantage as previous and future years, and that’s before the mess of how LAU has handled Covid19. Now with no clear communication students who’s practise revolves around others and facilities they have paid for, these students have been left completely in the dark with regards to continuing their work and how if at all it can be digitalised, which for many on fine art simply can not. To completely rule out the EOYS shows a blatant disregard to the way each of our degree courses were marketed towards us with the promise of networking and exhibition opportunities, which simply have never and now will never happen unless board members at LAU pull their pretentious heads out their arses.

A degree show can provide so many opportunities for students who want to go further in the creative industry after grad. Non-digital work is not the same digitised and too much of final year leads up to degree shows to miss the opportunity. We would have to question what people have actually paid for if it was possible for it to happen at a later date and it didn't.

Lily Burrill (Leeds, 2020-03-24)

I am a student and my work is 3D so digital would make me unhappy as people cant appreciate my work fully

Amy Worsnop (Leeds, 2020-03-24)

Work shown in a digital format is less aesthetically pleasing than having it physically in front of you. Not only this, but I would be for more comfortable and have greater ability to describe my work if in person.
