Petition to stop the Theatre Royal axing the Pantomime with this cast

#1201

This year was my 31st panto at Theatre Royal It has gone from my young son and I to now his wife and 2 children and her mother as well as 2 more grandchildren We all look forward to the panto every year You never get too old for the spectacular rubbish and love every minute of it. Why would anyone want to change a winning formula,I believe it was tried once before and failed miserably. Yes this year was slightly different but equally as good, and it was the first year without Berwick.

Sheila Evans (York, 2020-01-12)

#1202

We as a growing family look forward to attending this unique event every year, for over 30 years. The cast are superb and the whole format just works across the generations. Britain's longest continuously active theatre should keep this pantomime going, for the local audiences who enjoy it year after year.

John Thompson (York, 2020-01-12)

#1204

Getting rid of this panto is taking away a tradition of York that's so special to so many people. Berwick's retirement just means that the panto needs time to change and develop, we still have huge amounts of loyalty to the remaining cast members. Please don't change our family Christmas traditions forever.

Miriam Eyre (York, 2020-01-12)

#1207

Panto is a great British Christmas tradition and Berwick's team are the best around. This is not a one-off visit: families and groups come year after year. The cast are amazing, the atmosphere is wonderful and the show is a highlight in our theatrical year. If this is axed I sincerely hope they find another local venue, which will benefit from this glorious annual nonsense.

Jane Curtin (Leeds, 2020-01-12)

#1209

I have been to this pantomime ever since I was little and I absolutely love it! It would be terribly missed if it were gone.

Yasmin Bowerman (York, 2020-01-12)

#1214

The panto has been a tradition in York for over 40 years and 25 years for my family. It would be foolish for York and the panto audience to change this. In an era of change we must hold on to what is wonderful and the panto is the epitome of that.

Alison Lister (York, 2020-01-12)

#1216

My family has been going for years and years. It’s a tradition I would miss dearly

Charlotte Young (Manchester , 2020-01-12)

#1217

My husband and I and 7 grandchildren who go to the panto every year love d this year's performance of Sleeping Beauty!

Julia Hughes (York, 2020-01-12)

#1220

I know how much this means to family and friends who have been regulars in the audience for many years.

Noel Hulse (Manchester, 2020-01-12)

#1226

It’s obvious, I like many people have come to this panto for decades and this years show was fantastic again.

Ben Purvis (Nottingham, 2020-01-12)

#1229

This panto, the cast, everyone involved have entertained York audiences for over 40 years, the impact the shows have had and the relationship between the audience and the people involved is unique. This team have dedicated so many years to York and its pantomime, the departure of Berwick was clearly difficult for everyone involved and the loyal audience however this years show was fantastic, the rest of the team were great to watch, and the audience were excited for whats to come. The pantomime feels as though it belongs to its audience and the theatre should recognise that in moving in a new direction without the team we have come to know and love they are leaving an audience without there anual tradition, there family get together, there one night to see these superb actors who have been so loyal to us give yet another spectacular performance.

Thomas Grime (Manchester , 2020-01-12)

#1230

I’ve been going every year for 30 years with 4 generations of my family.
Will never go again if the YTR stop the pantomime returning.
Oh yes I will ... and so will the rest of the family !!!

Diane Jones (Tadcaster , 2020-01-12)

#1231

Heartbreaking news

Sue Laycock (York , 2020-01-12)

#1232

It's part of York's tradition, & the cast are like a family! Always entertaining & a pleasure to watch, a great part of my childhood, & still fantastic now!

Kate Ruddock (York, 2020-01-12)

The Theatre Royal pantomime, with Martin Barrass, Suzy Cooper, David Leonard, AJ Powell and with or without Berrick Kaler is a local institution. It represents a true family tradition for many and is close to the hearts of the people of York. To axe the cast that have made it so is a shortsighted and foolhardy decision that I believe the York Theatre Royal will come to regret. I for one will not be attending any Christmas show at The Theatre Royal. But I will certainly follow that cast should some other lucky local venue decide to snap them up. It is THEM we are loyal to - not the theatre, and certainly not you, Tom Bird!

Joss Widdowson (York, 2020-01-12)

#1236

I have been going to this pantomime for over 25 years and loved everyone of them. It is a traditional and local panto written and performed with lical people in mind. We do not need TV stars to make this panto worth going to. We go to it because it like part of our own family. Of course we missed Berwick this year but the cast carried on in true trooper fashion delivering annual rubbish....but it's our rubbish...so dont mess with it.

Dee Boyle (York, 2020-01-12)

#1240

I was born and lived in York for many years. I have gone to see the pantomime each year. It was apart of Christmas. If I still lived in York I would still be going.

Alison Ruzayi (Perth, 2020-01-12)

#1242

It is tradition...and the best panto in the world.

Gary Langley (York, 2020-01-12)

#1252

Don’t be idiots, you had something special. A z list panto dame won’t get them coming back.

Peter Lawson (York, 2020-01-12)

#1253

This pants is an important part of my family’s Christmas tradition and has been ever since I was a child.

Louisa Jordan (Selby, 2020-01-12)

#1254

This is Christmas tradition and a right of passage for us Yorkshire folk! #wagonwheels

Zoë Harrison (Driffield , 2020-01-12)

#1257

The Panto this year was great - just need to find a replacement dame - it's not that hard! Why don't you turn it into a reality TV show!

Kirsty Garcia (York, 2020-01-12)

#1258

The pantomime brings so much warmth and cheer to so many of all generations, consistently, year after year. We all totally love it! York is so fortunate to have such a totally unique pantomime - and the Theatre Royal is a brilliant location for it. Very much hope you'll reconsider your decision .... xx

Rowena Field (York, 2020-01-12)

#1259

I have been going to the pantomime for more than 10 years now and it's an important part of Christmas here in York.

Anne Hook (York, 2020-01-12)

#1260

Pantomime is a family tradition and YTR have maintained this through having a traditional pantomime without using TV stars and it is important that traditional pantos continue For future generations.

Anne-Marie Ledson (York, 2020-01-12)

#1262

I was born in 1974 in York and grew up with this panto. I travel home from Australia with my two kids to watch this panto as it is a tradition in York. This panto makes York what it is at Xmas and brings joy to so so many. Save our Panto

Joanne Dissanayake (Brisbane, 2020-01-12)

#1265

Terribly ill-advised decision by the Theatre Royal. Love this panto. Better with Berwick, but I reckon AJ or David could do a grand job as dame too.

Cath Whitford (York, 2020-01-12)

#1267

The cast are uniquely bonded and have important to local people for decades, as a part of their own Christmas family.

Rebecca Mullenger (York, 2020-01-12)

#1270

Management at YTR clearly do not understand the relationship between the pantomime and the people of York.

Trevor Rowley (York, 2020-01-12)

#1272

I want to

Steve Smithson (York, 2020-01-13)

#1273

The theatre royal's panto is a family tradition! We love it and pay a lot to go and watch. It is the first theatre so many children experience and the cast create a love of it. I'm appalled!

Patricia Smith (York , 2020-01-13)

#1277

I Love the York Panto and it looked from the sets, props etc this season as if someone had decided to set it up to 'fail'. My ex-wife and I see it every year together and our first years were when we were married. Axe this Panto and cast and we won't be back in Dec 2020!

David J Metcalf (Newcastle upon Tyne, 2020-01-13)

#1279

My husband and I have both worked in theatre for over 35 years. In 2019 we were lucky enough to have a free evening to watch the pantomime at York Theatre Royal. So worth the drive from Newcastle and a breath of fresh air with a cast to match. Very experienced, proessionalism and variety at it's very best. Family entertainment at it's very best. Sincerely hope York Theatre Royal will be moving forwards with their exceptional team in tow for many more years to come.

Sara Jane Perovic (Newcastle Upon Tyne, 2020-01-13)

#1281

I have seen many many of these very special pantos over my 64 years. Bring Berek back and give the people want they want

John Ellis (Sheffield , 2020-01-13)

#1284

The panto is what makes York at Christmas, the Panto cast are legends

Lee Sparling (York, 2020-01-13)

#1286

It’s a York institution that is an asset to the city - a ‘traditional’ panto will get lost in the competition.

David Barber (York, 2020-01-13)

#1288

I have come to this pantomime for the past 20 years, ever since I turned 4. It's a family tradition. It brings visitors and tourists in from all over the country. I now have a 6 year old who I hope to start bringing each year, but I wont bother if it's not the original cast.

Nikki O'Donnell (York, 2020-01-13)

#1294

Would like to keep the panto going in yorkbst theatre

Ian Sparling (York, 2020-01-13)

#1301

I’m signing because this type of pantomime has been loved for generations ... by all ages and had become a tradition for many generations and family members.

Nicola Robinson (Brough, 2020-01-13)

#1306

The panto is the best around

Carol Eccles (Selby, 2020-01-13)

#1307

I like these pantomimes

Anthony Simpson (Nottingham, 2020-01-13)

#1312

It's become part of our family Christmas tradition, plus us good fun.

Kay Horne (York, 2020-01-13)

#1319

It has been our family tradition for the past 28 years to go and see the York Panto. It is so sad that this is being taken away from us. I Feel extremely sorry for the cast, who have given much joy and laughter to so many people over the years. To have been told in such an abrupt way, that this was to be their last year, must have been very hard to bear. I only hope that a happy conclusion may be sought, or a new venue can be found. From a very sad Panto fan.

Jane Poole (Thirsk, 2020-01-13)

#1320

I think you are spoiling York's tradition. I've been going since I was very small. My 92 year old gran still struggles to come along but she manages and has been coming along with me and now my children for years. What a shame to stop it. I think it's a very silly decision to make. I will never step through your doors again if you stop it. It's the cast we come to see!! They are fabulous and you obviously do not appreciate what you have at York theatre royal! Grow a pair and accept you have made a HUGE WRONG decision!!!!! I have no more words!! 😢😢😢

Alison Brookes (York, 2020-01-13)

#1323

I’m signing because the panto is far too special and this cast are far too amazing for York to lose so hopefully they can continue and if another theatre gains there talent then the theatre royal will truly lose out in years to come as they have such a huge fan base

Natasha Aspden (York, 2020-01-13)

#1326

This is the first panto myself and my family have missed since 1994 as we felt it would not be the same without our famous Dame.

Avril Browne (York, 2020-01-13)

#1327

This pantomime IS Christmas in York. Listen to the thousands of happy, returning customers and keep it going

Simon Edwards (York, 2020-01-13)

#1328

The pantomime is a national treasure. Our family have been going for generations and my 8 year old daughter is now hooked.
Please don’t turn the pantomime into a load or rubbish with c lister soap celebrities in the key roles. We already have a unique pantomime, invest in it and evolve it with the current cast.

Suze Keeler (York, 2020-01-13)

#1330

the panto is brilliant and unique amongst all the other mundane pantos .
I think the ticket prices are too high though - but that is the theatre's fault

Carolyn Fisher (Whitby, 2020-01-13)

#1334

I've been coming to York Theatre Royal for 35 years to watch Berwick's panto preformed by the best cast in the world. If the remaining cast are no longer preforming at YTR i will no longer attend.

Melanie Drew (YORK, 2020-01-13)

#1336

Gone to panto every year for nearly 25 years such a shame please bring it back

Sue Hodgson (Scarborough , 2020-01-13)

#1343

I love the York Theatre Royal Panto!

Lois Tomlinson (North Newbald, 2020-01-13)

#1345

Distgusting if York Theatre go ahead with sacking this cast.

JAMES FERGUSON (Scarborough, 2020-01-13)

#1347

We haven't missed a year in the last 21 years. Our children who are now adults still want to go & so do their friends. We love it, a family birthday outing & our start to Christmas 😢

Helen Lindsay (York, 2020-01-13)

#1348

The Pantomime is an integral part of Christmas in York and loved by Thousands

Paul Freeman-Hacker (York, 2020-01-13)

#1354

I love these guys. Grew up watching them and the panto would never be the same without them. X

catrina wilkie (York, 2020-01-13)

#1355

This pantomime is what the world needs today, joy, escapism and laughter with people who feel like friends. I was 10 when I first saw Berwick in the show, my children were raised watching this show every Christmas and I want my grandchildren to experience the pure pleasure of this timeless show. Please, please, please don't cancel our pantomime!

Cheryl Bland (York, 2020-01-13)

#1362

This is one of the few remaining annual events in York for local people

Elizabeth Topi (York, 2020-01-13)

#1363

This panto is an institution so much so it was featured on BBC4's programme about pantomimes for being about the only true pantomime in England. Let's hope the panto goes elsewhere in York with Berwick for the next season and sod the theatre royal.

A Rutherford (Strensall, 2020-01-13)

#1370

This is the 'peoples panto' and must remain so. If it isn't broken, don't try to fix it. Kaler, Barass, Leonard, Cooper and Co. are 'Panto'. Just that!

Chris Dutton (Harrogate, 2020-01-13)

#1371

A fan for years, love the cast & their rapport. If we wanted to see a standard ‘celeb’ filled panto we’d go to the Opera house!

Stephanie Pears (York, 2020-01-13)

#1373

Cancelling the panto. season will be a great loss for York and so many people who travel far and wide to enjoy these productions.

Doreen Jaques (Scarborough , 2020-01-13)

#1377

We love this pantomime, and actually enjoyed this year more than the last few. If it changed in nature, cast or timing we would not come to see the show.

Michael Snell (York, 2020-01-13)

#1380

I am disgusted at how the theatre management have dealt with the problem of the panto. I appreciate that a new audience needs to be cultivated over time but to just sweep aside an older audience who buy full price tickets year on year is a disgrace. What is wrong with an older demographic. It has secured the theatre finances for many years.

J Simpson (Selby, 2020-01-13)

#1381

I have taken my children for over 30 years and my grandchildren for the last 19 years It is our Boxiing Day treat and whilst I do think Martin Barras is a bit immature and 'skippy' to be a dame he will grow into it All my friends are regular panto goers and it is a good source of income for the city and the Theatre Please do not replace those cast with 'celebrities ' we would not attend if you did we love our panto because it is local and we feel we know
our regular actors

Sally Hall (York , 2020-01-13)

#1385

Lové thé panto!!!

Tasha Livingstone (York, 2020-01-13)

#1386

If it isn't broken then don't need to fix It!

Eric Ambler (Leeds, 2020-01-13)

#1389

I travel all the way up from Daventry for this show it is the best panto in the world. Finishing it would be criminal. Its a step backwards and I should not bother supporting anohter thing at this theatre if the planned changes go ahead.

Maisy Radford (Daventry, 2020-01-13)

#1391

I feel strongly that a new employee should not be able to wipe away 40 years of tradition without even any discussion with the cast who have given so much to York. It also benefits York by attracting people from all over the north.

Ann Petherick (York, 2020-01-13)

#1393

It's a disgrace the way the most loyal cast albd audience in the world are being treated! At the very least let us say goodbye to our cast!

Jane Godfrey (Poole, 2020-01-13)

#1397

The Theatre Royal Panto has been a part of our year for nearly 30 years, and it would be a tragedy if it was stopped, especially if Berwick has said he wants to return.

Jon Browne (York, 2020-01-13)

#1399

It is imperative that we keep traditions alive and preserve as much as we can, the magic of Christmas and Panto for children of all ages!

Roz Trotter (Pontefract, 2020-01-13)

#1400

I'm signing because my family-all generations-have loved this treat of the Christmas season for many many years. This year was bound to be tough for the cast without Berwick but they did a wonderful job. I think Martin is happier as the Dame's son so keep all the cast and add a new Dame? The young man who played the flunkey this year would be great. Fantastic stage presence and wonderful voice. All the 'old' cast are masters of their own roles. It would be a tragedy to lose them.
