PETITION WILMER PLACE RETAIL DEVELOPMENT

=================================

We the undersigned are registering our objection to the proposed planning application by Newmark Properties and Sainsbury’s to build a 24,000ft² Sainbury’s store in Wilmer Place at the junction of Stoke Newington Church Street and Stoke Newington High Street. The recently opened small Sainsbury’s and Tesco, larger Iceland store and very new Sainsbury’s in Stamford Hill have left the area ‘Supermarket Saturated’.

We are concerned the effects of the developments will be:

  • The possible closure of many food shops and other local businesses which are already struggling in the current recession.
  • A heavy increase in traffic, congestion, air pollution and an increase in risk of accidents: especially because very large lorries will be turning outside William Patten Primary School into Wilmer Place.
  • To ruin the current Victorian façade of Stoke Newington High Street through the demolition of two shops to create a wide entrance for cars.
  • Potential damage to Abney Park Cemetery.

Stoke Newington is known for its special atmosphere of independent shops and community spirit. One large supermarket in this particular location would undoubtedly change this unique area.

Once the application has been submitted you have 21 days to make a comment to Hackney Planning Dept. The application number will be on the site notice or you can find it on the Hackney Planning Department website. http://www.hackney.gov.uk/search-applications
