I’m signing because it’s the only logical way to deal with school during a pandemic

i’m signing because we should not be punished for not being comfortable going into school

I think this is crazy, making kids go to school, IN THE MIDST OF A PANDEMIC. I thought the school was attempting to minimize the amount of total cases as much as possible, well i thought wrong, does forcing kids to go to school sound “safe” to you?? And if we don’t go to school, even if we attend the google meets and do everything that is needed, we’re marked absent, making physically going into school the only way to be marked present. I think this is absurd and the staff needs to get a point of view from the students opposed to just themselves.

boys don't got time to be going to school to do the same exact thing wed be doing at home

The attendence policy does not work well in a pandemic and people shouldn't be marked absent if they are virtual on a day they are supposed to be in school.

The new rules they have put in place are an absolute joke and when the teachers dont agree with them, then you know theres something wrong with the new rules in place

Tj should put in to perspective of how much effort it takes for us to get up and go to school or online and if your feeling sick you shouldnt be punished for needing to stay home so u dont get everyone else sick.

I'm singing cause we should be forced to turn are camrea on 7 in the morning for no reason it is not gonna make a difference even if we have are camrea is on

my parents are above the age of 60 and i’d rather not risk their health or mine because of my attendance. it’s ridiculous.

eveana olah (jefferson hills , 2021-01-27)

I don’t plan on risking the health of others for attendance. Many students have anxiety and forcing them to turn on their camera is unhelpful. Along with that, many students have to do schoolwork in their rooms, which are not always school appropriate. They shouldn’t have to change their living space just for their camera to be on. We have lives outside of school, and our mental and physical health is honestly more important than attendance.

Ashley Pesanka (Pittsburgh, 2021-01-27)

it's completely irrational, it is outside the comfort zone for many. this should be the student's voluntary decision rather than the school's.

As a parent, I’m very disappointed in the policy of punishing the kids because they don’t want to turn their cameras on and marking them absent. Anyone who has any experience in virtual classrooms as well as the new normal of having meetings or training sessions online, knows that people don’t like turning their cameras on. Adults are just as guilty. Perhaps a compromise would be to take attendance and have the kids turn their cameras on long enough to see their face and then turn it off. OR not have all their pictures up there for classmates to see. Set it where only the teachers can see them? There has to be some compromise here or because obviously the kids aren’t happy. But a lot parents aren’t either. There’s enough stress on us trying to keep it all together as it is. Please reconsider.

Nico Moore (Jefferson hills, 2021-01-27)

I am all virtual and i am ALL virtual because of the coronavirus. My parents nor do I feel comfortable going into school knowing I could put them or more at risk. Making students attend school when this virus is happening is not right and is NOT fair. If students attend class on time and participate, I see no issue. I am not proud to be from TJ. As young adults we should make the decision on what we’re going to do. Isn’t that what TJ is trying to teach us? How to take responsibly? How to be adults? TJ clearly is making those decisions for us.

Giavanna Solomon (Pittsburgh , 2021-01-27)

The new attendance rules are complete b.s. It is unlawful to force students to come to school, but even worse to force them to turn their cameras on during online learning.

Yes Sir (Pittsburgh , 2021-01-27)

Has to be other options then show up or turn the camera on or else. My kid doesn’t want to turn it on. Have the teacher ask a question to be answered in the chat. Then you know their there and paying attention. Not that hard to find other solutions.

If we are truly nearing a return to normalcy then why change policies at this point?

The last I checked we are still in the middle of a pandemic with no real end in sight. Vaccination rollout has been slow at best and the new president has instituted several executive order aim to slow the spread through various mandates. The vaccines are not even approved for children at this point. Deaths, new cases and virus mutations continue to rise in the US and now the district decided to implement a policy where students who decide to engage in virtual learning on an in school day will be marked absent. What is the sense in that?

This policy will unfortunately result in discouraging sick students from staying home and instead coming to school and potentially spreading the virus. Most of the new virus variants are much more contagious than the original, therefore, mitigation measures that worked in the past may be less effective.

Rather than instituting draconian measures that punish all, isolate the problematic students and correct the behavior.

Additionally, while I agree that students should be appropriately dressed and engaged during virtual days, has the school district thought about the bandwidth issues that may occur if all have to use cameras.

It’s not just students working at home. Parents, siblings and others are all in the same situation. There are times I have to turn my camera off due to the bandwidth problems associated with so many people streaming at one time.

We have endured so much change, why institute more at this point?

David Galizia (Jefferson Hills, 2021-01-27)

I dislike this policy and it breaches privacy of students. It may also create anxiety for those with a non stable home.

I’m signing because I attend Thomas Jefferson high school and we should NOT be forced to turn our cameras on for online school. As well as lose attendance due to having symptoms on a day that I’m suppose to attend in person learning.

It is truly unjust to force students to attend in person while still facing a global pandemic. The virtual class exists for a reason...

Kyle Bonham (Bethel Park , 2021-01-27)

I’m signing because this new rule is retarded and needs changed as all this will do is make it harder on parents and students. Plus this will just make us students simply not show up for class if we are online days we are supposed to be in but still get marked absent.

Josh Hynes (Jefferson Hills, 2021-01-27)

some people aren’t lucky enough to have a home big enough that they can all have their separate rooms. to demand that everyone have a private learning space is absolutely ridiculous and completely classist. administration is completely ignoring the less fortunate, much less the mentally ill who sometimes cannot even get out of bed in the mornings because of their depression.

The new expectations and rules for students are unfair, unreasonable, and do not improve the learning experience for students. Instead of making our education better, all these rules do is make everyone's lives more difficult in a time where they're already difficult enough.

We are in a pandemic, and so going back to normal is not possible right now. We have to wait until this passes before we’re able to move on with our lives, and the sooner we all realize that, the better we’ll end up.

Brody Woodward (Pleasant Hills, 2021-01-27)

#154

this is just stupid if you think about it. if i were forced to stay home by the state quarantine guidelines and i literally JOIN THE ONLINE CLASSES like we’ve been doing without an issue all year, you’re telling me i’d be marked absent due to the state laws!? okay well i guess i’ll just go to school with covid then so i’m not absent instead of staying home and simply joining the online classes that still have to be recorded for the virtual students anyways. that’s a great idea!! props to tjhs for single handedly increasing allegheny counties covid cases👏🏼😁

t (pittsburgh , 2021-01-27)

We shouldn't be forced to have our cameras on during online school. Students may need to take the day off due to not having a ride or they are sick. We should be considered present if we're online.

Maddy P (Pittsburgh, 2021-01-27)

We’ve recently lost a student due to his personal information being leaked, now the school board expects us to open up our homes to them. The school doesn’t have the right to force us to expose ourselves for points, they don’t know what students go through. They are more worried about their quotas and national standings. The attendance policy is atrocious and makes kids feel as if they have to go in, regardless of health. The school needs to step up for once and care about the students rather than grants.

It makes no sense that if we don’t attend in school but still show up online it counts as an absence

Ryan Rohm (Jefferson Hills, 2021-01-28)

#185

You have to put the lives/choice of students and family members above being nationally ranked and receive grants for unnecessary funding. Also if this plan was working why switch now and cause a total shut down a couple weeks later. It just doesn’t make sense to change a game plan that isn’t working. Finally administration doesn’t understand what students have to go throughout, they are just concerned about looking good and keeping there jobs intact.

i’m signing because having your cameras on might be scary for some people and you should not be forced to come to school if they are sick or if they have a family member that has major health issues and does not want to put them at risk.

Although I understand why the school is pushing for stricter attendance and having cameras on, why? Some kids might not have a school friendly background and can’t fix that, or some kids might not want to be viewed because of anxiety. If the school is afraid of kids not participating and being away from the Chromebook because the teachers can’t see them, then start interacting with the students more and if someone is non-responsive, take off participation points. Same with the hybrid schedules. If its better for a students mental health for them to stay home, or they’re sick, or etc, as long as they attend somehow or someway, who cares??? They’re still participating in class either way and its not something that needs to be cracked down on. OH, and not to mention, some students CANNOT USE THEIR CHROMEBOOKS IN CLASS due to bandwidth issues from other students having to have their cameras on, and this is literally STILL A PANDEMIC. Some people have older parents or relatives living with them, some people have bad immune systems, etc, and the school has already proven itself to be not the safest place with not enforcing masks at sports meets with a total of five cases popping up within the band and girls sports teams if I’m right. This is ridiculous and irresponsible of the school.
