THe Norwegians need to study the roots of European culture. Norwegian scholarship on antiquity is excellent and would be harmed by the proposed closure.

I am signing because institutions of this kind as the Norvegian Institute are indispensable as research places for scholars from various countries especially in such places which have great importance for human history and culture. Their specialised libraries and collections combined with historical and topographical context of resaerched problems make the studies much more deeply. Monies are very important but impact of the institution on scholarship is something what has no price.

I really appreciated the high level of archaeological activity given by the Norvegian Institute in Athens. I’ll never forget prof. Erik Opstby and his great commitment when on April 16, 1997, thanks to a collaboration between the Scuola Archeologica Italiana di Atene, Norske Institutt i Athen and Università di Reggio Calabria, we were both involved in the organisation of the stunning exhibition
“ L'architettura samia di Occidente Dalla cava al tempio: Siracusa, Locri, Caulonia”.
I strongly support the Novergian Institute at Athens

I´m signing this petition, because the Norwegian Institute at Athens is an essential part of the complex of Nordic Institutes at Athens and the Nordic co-operation in the Mediterranean world, both ancient and present.

The Norwegian Institute at Athens is not only important for Greek-Norwegian cooperation and cultural relationships, it is also an integrated and important part of Nordic cooperation in Athens regarding archaeology and classical research. Students and scholars from all the Nordic countries benefit from the close relationship between the separate Nordic institutes in Athens, in the same way as Norwegian students and scholars through this are given a well established gateway into the network of international schools for classical studies, archaeology, and cultural history in Athens.

Nordiska instituter i antikens städer är viktiga mötesplatser för alla, men särskilt för alla som arbetar inom de brancher som dessa instituter företräder. Forskningsvärlden har inte råd att gå miste på dem.

It is unthinkable that the Norwegian Intitute in Athens will be shut down. Not only because Norway is a rich country which can afford financing such a cultural institute, but also because the Norwegian Institute in Athens always presented considerable and valuable research and activities. As a person with interest in the language of the Nordic countries - I speak Swedish and Danish and I can read and unterstand Norwegish- I am surprised, upset and disappointed by this unpleasant development- which, I hope, will not finally happen!
