I'm signing because the Norwegian Institute has provided an enormous benefit to the Greek society. It not only provides excellent lectures and guest speakers on the latest studies in archaeology but, also about Greek and European society. It's a place that brings society an opportunity to think about community and the importance of the connection to the European family of countries. In a time when Europeans need more connection across countries and more promotion of a better understanding of Europe, its people, and culture, I have to say that closing the Norwegian Institute would be a great detriment to the spirit of what Europe is suppose to be.

I support everything mentioned in the petition 100%. A loss of the institute will be a great loss for all who are interested in the ancient and present greek culture and archeological sites. I lived in Athens from 1965 to 1967 and I want also younger generations to get to know this culture and its people as it is important also to Norwegian history.

In this day and age of crass nationalism, post truth and fake news the Norwegian Institute in Athens represents cultural sanity, international cooperation and a beacon for younger and senior researchers. Take care of your treasures you will regret it if you throw them away. Maintaining the Institure will send an important message of cultural solidarity and support to Greece and also to other European counties and beyond.

(Uppsala, Sweden, 2018-11-06)

I'm signing this petition to express my belief that the continuing existence of the Norwegian Institute at Athens is of the greatest importance to the future of Western cultural exchange and the scholarly investigation of historical and cultural aspects of the civilisations of the Mediterranean regions. At this time, when popular culture and a focusing on the present seem to push the past and historical perspectives into the background, it is important to provide a counterbalance containing links to those societies, ideas and artistic manifestations that are such an important basis for our own existence.

The importance of the institute is obvious for present day research and cultural competance and communication . In addition, due to the importance of Greek civilization through history, all civilized countries should have an active link to Greece for its educational and cultural contacts. As a teacher I have been so lucky that twice I have had a stay with the institute, which has been both useful and very interesting. Norway is a very rich country which should not have any problems in financing the institute. When other European contries have their institutes and connections, why not Norway?
