I am writing on behalf of Grade R educators who have dedicated their time, skills, and passion to the foundation phase of education, yet continue to face the challenge of job insecurity due to the lack of permanent employment opportunities.

Grade R is a critical stage in a child's academic development, forming the foundation for future learning. Educators in this phase play a vital role in shaping young minds, fostering literacy, numeracy, and social development. Despite this, many Grade R teachers remain employed on a contract basis, often under difficult conditions, with no job security, benefits, or long-term stability.

We believe that permanent employment for Grade R educators is not only fair but essential for the sustainability and quality of early childhood education. The uncertainty of contractual employment affects both educators and learners, as high turnover rates disrupt continuity in the classroom.

We, the undersigned, kindly request the Department of Education to:

Recognize the importance of Grade R educators and acknowledge them as permanent staff.
Implement policies that ensure job security by offering permanent contracts to qualified Grade R teachers.
Ensure equal pay and benefits in alignment with other educators in the formal schooling system.
Improve working conditions and professional development opportunities for Grade R educators.
We urge the relevant authorities to address this matter with urgency to ensure that the educators responsible for laying the foundation of our children’s education are given the stability and recognition they deserve.

I am a Grade R educator, after the Bella Act I was so sure, my status of employment will change from contract to permanency, but I strongly feel I am being exploited, you can not hold a qualification and not earn accordingly, contracts are only meant for a short period,we have been serving the Department for years, yet we don't have any benefits, no bonus, no medical aid, no pension fund, no housing allowance nothing, instead the little that we are getting from the Department which is now 9900 is taxed and we still pay the Uif, which we will never benefit from, why are we being exploited, why is the Department violating the Bella Act law. The same Department that is crying of not having enough funds, has the funds to employ the EA'S, each school does not get less than 5 EA'S that is a mere speculation they get more than that, including the high schools. Now Grade R teachers are only at Primary schools, the biggest schools has 4 or 5 Grade R classes, and there are not that many, why doesn't DOE use that money to absorb all Grade R educators, Do we allegedly belong to someone's tender", is the owner of the alleged tender so inhumane that we would have people suffering and other even dying because of having to live a depressed life, where you are faced with paying bills of the qualification that you fought so hard to obtain, only for it not to be recognized? We have people in the Department with just a mere matric yet they earn decent salaries, is the Department saying that education or qualifications don't matter? This is so heartbreaking and frustrating at the same time, because even our so called leaders simply turn a blind eye on this ongoing exploitation of Grade R teachers, no Qualifications is lesser than the other, all Qualifications should be respected and recognized accordingly, just because Grade R teachers are dealing or specialising with Grade R learners it doesn't mean the qualifications the possess are not valid or important. A Grade R teacher with a Diploma in Grade R teaching is qualified, because that is the qualification a person needs inorder to be a Grade R teacher, having A Diploma in Foundation Phase or A Degree is a bonus because that actually means that Grade R teacher can teach other Grades in the foundation phase, so stop undermining our qualifications, our Diplomas holds the same credits as any other Diploma it was not a short course, we studied for 3 years, each year we went to schools for practicals and we were assessed, it is Nqf level 6, REQv 13 worth 360 credits, stop belittling us #KznDoe, we not looking for posts to be created, remember we reporting to schools daily, where we are currently teaching, we have classes, we have learners, do right by us, absorb us fully and pay us accordingly, demand permanent employment with full benefits like any government employee, stop turning a blind eye when it comes to us and our demands we are people too and enough is enough "!
