I have a son with autism , he attends a mainstream school in colchester. He is quite able academically so would not benefit from specialist school. My issue is childhood is precious, it's a time for fun happy memories. Is my son happy at school ..... No . Is he creating fond memories...... No. Is he accepted and understood....... No. Is it a daily struggle ....... Yes. A school suitable for high functioning autistic children would be fantastic. A chance for them to feel safe, valued, understood and accepted . A place where they can reach their potential , with a smile on their face. Half the stress , half the drama.

completely agree with your comments, mine attend mainstream school/college and for my daughter she misses more college than attends.she is very academically gifted as is my youngest but they do not qualify for a specialist school so this would be perfect then they could get the education and support they deserve.
