Final update - Good news

2023-06-21 21:13:04

Sorry for the delayed update. Once we FINALLY won and then it was graduation time flew. The school board was of no help. I finally told the Administration that we only wanted to end the year on a good note and for Camryn to get what she had earned, but if their final decision for both senior trip and A+ was no then we would let our lawyer proceed with filing our complaint. Then within a matter of days suddenly the school's lawyers said they had to let her go and give her back her A+ because if we went to court then the school would lose. I really believe the admin thought we would just give up.

The struggle never should have been this hard. For other parents who have to fight for their children's rights, we stand with you.

April 16, 2023 Twenty days from Senriors' Last Day

2023-04-16 15:55:49

Unfortunately I do not have a happy update to make.

There are only twenty or so days until Senior Trip. We have supplied clarifying documents from both the surgeon who removed her tonsils verifying the time she was to stay home after surgery and a letter of support from her primary doctor stating that Camryn has had to be treated for multiple medical conditions and should not be punished for needing to seek treatments necessary for her health.
Superintendent Barnes insists that the School Board just “doesn’t feel like she has spent enough time at school. It’s not that she is not a good student.” But why isn’t it? Despite enduring three surgeries and related symptoms and struggles, she has excelled in her studies and remained on honor roll, earned top honors in many of her classes, has consistently scored proficient or higher on all standardized testing, and will likely be Valedictorian of her class. She has never needed to serve a suspension or detention, completed numerous concession stand shifts, and participated in all fund raising. This year she was even voted to receive the DAR Good Citizen Award by her teachers. While meeting with Superintendent Barnes another senior came to the door needing to serve a detention. I don’t know why the detention was given and I also believe this student is a good kid and should and will get to go on senior trip, but I looked at the kid and at Mr. Barnes and said, “but they will get to go on senior trip?“
Help us understand how students who make choices that deserve consequences can serve those consequences and have their slate wiped clean, but a student who has through no choice of her own had to miss school for medical treatment can lose it all. The attendance committee met again earlier this semester and reviewed her case and gave her back her A+ but she had to miss a day a week ago due to needing a strep test. She was provided documentation of her visit and the requirement to stay home while she started the antibiotics. Which aligns with the Student Handbook policy: “It is unlawful for any child to attend public school while afflicted with any contagious/infectious disease…Exclusion from school is at your doctor's direction.” But because we followed guidelines, and she missed another day she will likely need to appeal a third time in hopes of keeping her A+ scholarship.
Throughout this entire process we have asked for a direct response from members of the school board and received none. Not one member has reached out or accepted the request for justification of their decision. When Troy served on the school board, he often received calls from community members and engaged in conversations as was his duty as he was serving in an elected position. We have heard that the administration and some members of the board are not happy with our choice to put Camryn’s story out on social media, but what other choice have you given us? We know most of you and know you would also do everything within your power to support your children getting everything they deserve.
So here we are a little over twenty days from seniors’ last day. Camryn comes home most days with a headache and sick to her stomach because she is so sad and frustrated from listening to her classmates plan and get excited for senior trip. The lack of compassion and understanding at this point is just cruel. She has done everything she was asked and we have provided piles of documentation. Granting her the opportunity to end her time at West Nodaway on a high note should not be that hard of a decision to make.

Thank you again.

Thank you for all of the support and kind words for Camryn. Sadly, the administration and Board of education have no empathy and have chosen once again to do nothing to grant her appeals. We will continue to fight for the opportunities she has earned, but must also take time to ensure her emotional and mental well being. Wishing you and all of your families health and happiness.

Thank you!

We just wanted to give a quick update and a BIG thank you. In less than 48 hours we are nearly at 1000 signatures (currently 925). Camryn is overwhelmed with the amount of support you have all shown her. This has been rough on her mentally and emotionally and yet she goes to school everyday ready to learn and enjoy what is left of her senior year. We are hoping that the Board will make the right decision soon, but if not we are not giving up. Many of you have sent information on several resources to look into and we will try every single one if we have to. Much love to you and your families. If you all ever need support we will be at the front of the line.
