I am troubled by the defunding of the Master's program in gender studies at Central European University. Such programs are needed precisely to understand the politics of authoritarianism.

Academic freedom is a backbone of democratic societies worldwide. The Hungarian government must be stopped in its ridiculous efforts to turn the country into a backward, authoritarian state.

Solidarity with colleagues in Hungary. This is so sad and a serious threat to academic freedom.

Gender Studies programs should not be banned. Knowledge - and focus of study - should not be restricted.

My colleagues in Hungary who work on gender perspectives have made a huge contribution to our understanding of history and society in Hungary and beyond. They are an asset and a credit to scholarship

Gender studies is a scientific discpline. We, as Europeans, have decided to employ science in the improvement of our societies, economies and technologies. Gender studies fulfils an important role in this endeavour and should be represented in all European countries.

As a field for interdisciplinary studies devoted to gender identity and gendered representation, this program and its categories of analysis are mostly necesary in the present University curricula

The institutionalization of Gender Studies is a fundamental achievement. It's crucial for democratization processes.

Je signe car la recherche scientifique ne peut faire avancer les connaissances humaines, et ainsi aider à améliorer nos destins communs, que dans la liberté absolue vis-à-vis de tout pouvoir.

I'm signing because I believe in the worthwhile research and study that this master's program is for.

This ideological, anti-equality initiative is an attack on academic freedom, the freedom of inquiry that makes knowledge production robust.

(Thunder Bay, 2018-08-17)

#2106

It is an unacceptable intervention threatening scientific freedom. Further, educating people on gender studies is hugely important for achieving gender equality.

(Dublin, 2018-08-17)

#2109

Gender Studies is a valid and vital academic discipline, and in any event, it is not for governments to tell universities what they can and cannot teach.

(WARSAW, 2018-08-17)

Social change is necessary for improvement of societies, i.e., the lives of us humans, especially those who have been, are disadvantaged by long-established social patterns. The pursuit of gender studies belongs to this advancement effort and should therefore be supported.

I am myself a scholar of gender, and I have worked with students specializing in gender studies. Government suppression of a whole field of study is characteristic of authoritarian regimes, not democratic ones. I expected the Hungarian Communist government to refuse to permit study of gender, but I hoped that the post-Soviet government would genuinely embrace humanistic values. I see that it chooses instead to replicate the bad decisions of the past.

I am a Professor of Gender and Women's Studies at University of California, Berkeley. I find the termination of this important program to be unfortunate and support all efforts to reinstate it.

(Berkeley, 2018-08-17)

Government suppression of renowned and intellectually acclaimed fields of university study is a bullish and fascistic act of sadly simpering masculine fear and impotence. The attempt should be immediately abolished. And in the immediate present comedians should have a field day with the prickly anxieties of the Hungarian male.
