Proposal for a Revised System for the Election of Grade 7 Leaders of Laerskool Marble Hall

Dear Sir / Madam,

We, the undersigned, would like to submit a proposal regarding the current process through which Grade 7 leaders of Laerskool Marble Hall are selected.
We appreciate the system currently in place and the school’s efforts to ensure fair and balanced decisions. However, we believe there is room for improvement that could enhance the experience for both Grade 6 and Grade 7 learners.


Current Situation:

At present, leaders are chosen at the end of Grade 7 based on a points system and a voting session.
While the points system is a good idea in principle, the timing of its implementation is too late in the year, resulting in limited opportunities for learners to demonstrate or develop their leadership abilities before the final selection is made.


Proposed Changes:

We propose that:

  1. The points system be implemented from the start of Grade 6, allowing learners the opportunity throughout the year to earn points for responsibility, conduct, participation, and leadership.

  2. The election of Grade 7 leaders take place at the end of Grade 6, based on both the accumulated points and votes from teachers and classmates.

  3. The selected learners assume their leadership roles at the start of Grade 7, with sufficient preparation and guidance to perform their duties confidently and effectively.


Benefits of the Proposed System:

Reduces pressure on Grade 7 learners: They can focus on their academics and final primary school year without the added stress of a late election process.

Gives Grade 6 learners a chance to grow: They know early on what is expected of them and can work towards demonstrating leadership qualities throughout the year.

Improves consistency: The points system can be monitored throughout the year, ensuring fairness and transparency.

Allows better preparation: Selected leaders begin Grade 7 ready to take on their responsibilities, as they have already been chosen and trained.

Develops genuine leadership skills: Learners are assessed over an extended period on qualities such as teamwork, attitude, example, and participation — not just popularity or single moments of impression.


Our Request:

We respectfully request that the school consider adjusting the election timeline and points system as outlined above — starting the process in Grade 6, with the election taking place at the end of that year.
We believe this change will create a fairer, more supportive, and more effective leadership programme for all learners involved.
