With all the evident problems of climate change we should be encouraging people to commute by train, not taking away services so people feel forced to drive. A 2-hour wait at the end of the day is clearly unacceptable.

This is clearly the first step towards further cancellations on this important commuting line. the 5.30 Can it be a deliberate attempt to sabotage jobs for many working commuters, present and future? Or is it a piece of pig-headed public stupidity

At a time when many local jobs are threatened, or actually disappearing, especially in this part of the country, (already less well off than most areas), it seems madness to do serious harm to any existing opportunities to work, which this withdrawal and any other similar withdrawals will undoubtedly cause! And so the cuts to public transport go on making life for the general public more and more difficult. We must stand together and fight for our rights. The government give huge tax cuts etc. to oil and gas companies in their rush for unconventional gas and oil extraction but seem to ignore the vast difficulties the general public have with basic services removed. This is WRONG!

It is a fact that more electrified trains on the West Coast Main results in less services on the branch lines. The same is happening on the line to Barrow and it has to stop. It should not be forgotten that many branch line passengers end up as main line passengers.

Regular trains into the Lake District are essential for business and tourist traffic. The service goes a very long way in supporting sustainable transport in a sensitive area that can have too much road traffic. Transpennine should go all the way to invest in rural services and areas that have high road traffic congestion. As a large transport company they should realise their public obligations in the way other companies do, such as Virgin. They provide a good service and so people expect them to retain the service for the long term - not the quick profit.

Not only is the train needed for commuters, think of the thousands of tourists who use it every year.

Don't withdraw the trains- put bigger ones on in high season (or more of them).
