I support Comet Swimming Club and totally opposed to GDC contracting non local company to deliver Learn to Swim in Tairawhiti.

Carnie Nelson (Gisborne , 2023-06-04)

#1206

This is my swimming club. I’ve been apart of this swimming club since I got my first pair of togs to now with younger family members learning to swim from the best club in town. I find it upsetting that our local council doesn’t care enough to support a local organisation who not only provide swimming lessons but they are big advocates for swim safety, whānau inclusion and community engagement. It’s a shame that this has happened. I back Comet and always will 💫.

Hinemairangi Pahau-Wilson (Gisborne , 2023-06-04)

Taught at Elgin, have seen how : highly skilled, professional, dedicated, Comet swimming coaches and staff are. They have taken local children from water confidence through to competition at international levels.

I think it’s important that our local council suppers our local community and in particular the well established comet swimming club. My one year old daughter goes to swimming lessons with Comet.

Holly Tunstall (Gisborne, 2023-06-04)

#1229

It is absolutely unbelievable that a long standing business such as Comet was not the obvious choice for this, I understand why but surely there could have been talks to make it happen for them. You've got to do better GDC!!

Nicole Lloyd (Gisborne, 2023-06-04)

I want our council to support local and I hugely disagree with them getting a company OUTSIDE of our community

Ngarongo Eaton (Gisborne , 2023-06-04)

Support local. They've supported us. An equal process isnt necessarily an equitable process. If they don't have programmes offered that the other international company had (i.e. te reo classes), why not partner with them to develop them?

Comet is a local provider of learn to swim programs. They do an excellent job & I find it unbelievable that the GDC would give the contract to an overseas group.

Ellie Butler (Gisborne, 2023-06-05)

#1268

Gisborne is my home town and I still have lots of family members and I still care about what goes on in Gisborne. Also Comet Swimming Club taught me to swim a lot of years ago. Huia Holden-Judd (Gisborne , 2023-06-05)

#1303

Absolutely disgusting that our Council, whom we vote for to support our community, has chosen an overseas business to run a swimming programme at our almost completed Kiwa pools. I believe GDC need to lead by example and support community/local. If GDC want te reo swim classes, which is awesome, just communicate to Comet and they’ll make it happen I’m sure, same with the 80 free lessons. Communicate, negotiate and work together.
Value our people over $$, we’ve been through enough here without this bullshit!

Local businesses and clubs should take priority over international corperations/ businesses espesially when they have been active in supporting this community since 1996. An explanation as to why this hasnt happened would be appreciated.

#1318

Provincial growth funds projects were about local jobs in local communities and existing contracts and locals must be part of a procurement policy for these projects. What a travesty.

Dana Kirkpatrick (Gisborne, 2023-06-05)

#1319

I don’t agree with what the council has done. Comet was a local club !!

Maria Phillips Phillips (Gisborne, 2023-06-05)

Fiona Charrington (Gisborne , 2023-06-05)

Comet swimming club have been serving Gisborne community for many years. If as GDC stated was a close call between them surely it would be a forgone conclusion to stay with the existing provider rather than changing ? Once again profits will go off shore.

Viki Phelps (Gisborne, 2023-06-05)

Karina Nepia (Gisborne, 2023-06-05)

#1337

I don’t believe the council has made the right decision. Why would they go out of the district to award a multimillion dollar company a contract over a well established local club, it doesn’t sit right with me and my whanau.

Irene Wynyard (Gisborne, 2023-06-05)

David Gardner (Tauranga , 2023-06-05)

#1347

One of our children swam with Comet for several years and benefitted hugely. 65 years of dedicated service to Gisborne children should count for something surely! Given the opportunity the community would very likely have stepped up to support Comet to provide the extra add ons that the Australian company have promised. Very sad at this GDC decision. Seems an ill thought out to me. Hope it can be rolled back

Nicola Jones (Gisborne , 2023-06-05)

#1369

Comet Swimming club has proven their responsibilities to Turanganui in the swimming space.

Harata Gibson (Gisborne, 2023-06-05)

#1370

Comet swimming club has been a huge part of my life, my whanau and friends lives also teaching our community how to swim. It would be very disheartening and upsetting to see what they have gifted to us over all these years be given to another outfit that is not even from our region! I think it is pretty disrespectful and disappointing that our council could choose this and allow to happen. I really hope they reconsider this decision

Casey Blair (Gisborne, 2023-06-05)

Comet swimming club have been a huge part of the Gisborne swimming communityfor a long time and should be able to continue teaching learn to swim classes st the Kiwa pools.

Colleen Robinson (Gisborne, 2023-06-05)

#1393

Because this deal was purely done based upon n lining a corporate billionaire’s pocket and GDC wanting a cut, it should of been consulted and in the best interest of our children which it is not! Comet have helped my 3 children learn to swim and me before that, no doubt they have saved hundreds from drowning, so show them the respect they deserve!

Ros Faulkner (Gisborne, 2023-06-05)

#1397

GDC have let this community down once again, they continue to make poor decisions. They are lining the pockets of a corporate giant who doesn’t give a single thought to our children.

#1398

Comet have served our rohe, hapori & whanau for many decades.
