The TekNat Faculty Board is about to make a decision that will shape the future of CEMUS. On 19–20 October, the board will discuss whether CEMUS should continue at roughly its current size or be closed down, most likely by 2028.
CEMUS is not just another course provider. It is a unique, shared, student-led educational model in which students do more than attend classes: they help coordinate, design, and develop the courses they learn from. That structure gives students practical experience, responsibility, and a voice in how learning is created. Its model is an example that has inspired students beyond Uppsala University to help promote diversity in teaching methods and skills.
Hundreds of students have taken part in and benefited from CEMUS since 1992, and if it is closed down, that experience and learning environment will be lost for good. Ending the centre would affect future students and the wider university community that relies on CEMUS for its distinctive educational value.
Keeping CEMUS alive would preserve a model that has clearly proven its worth. It would allow the faculty to retain a space where students can learn through collaboration, take part in shaping their education, and build skills that are essential and relevant in our current world.
We ask the TekNat Faculty Board to decide on 19–20 October to continue CEMUS at its current size and reject any plan to close it down by 2028.
This is a decision about more than one centre. It is about keeping a rare educational model that students actively use, value, and help build. CEMUS deserves continuity, not to be shut down.
