Urgent petition for the attention of Mayor of Newham Rokhsana Fiaz OBE / Sadiq khan Mayor of London

The Abbey Mills Site in Canning Town East London has been through decades of planning disputes with the Labour Council of Newham.

In 1996 the local community purchased this site for the purpose of building a much needed centre (Riverine Centre) for the benefit of the hundreds of thousands of residents within East London and beyond.

Since the initial meetings that took place between representatives of the Trust behind this site until today this project has been blocked again and again by regular interference from local labour Councillors and unauthorised self proclaimed community leaders. Islamaphobic campaigns have been orchestrated via local Councillors to tarnish the image of the organisation behind this site. Self proclaimed Muslim leaders have used this site for political gain and used the former mayor Robin Wales as well as senior planning officers to systematically block the site from being developed. Representatives of the council and Labour Councillors have persistently demanded for labour membership intake in exchange for planning permission.

As a result unauthorized individuals have taken complete liberty of the situation and continue to exploit this site since their removal by its legal owners after an internal investigation in November 2017.

These individuals have used police through their connections to use the site for illegal activity till date knowing well that they can hold back the council from enforcing the law.

Police has been used as a weapon to intimidate and falsely arrest senior members of the Mosque as well as other respected members of the community who stood up against corruption and held the culprits to account for their actions.

Repeated freedom of information requests against individuals such as "Shiraz Kothia" and Umesh Desai been declined by the council. The former ousted mayor held back a master plan application by the Trust behind this site and instructed officers not to validate the application so that he could include the site as a S10 strategic core site overnight.

We demand a complete and through investigation from an independent panel in the best interest of regaining community Trust and preventing social deprivation for the people of Newham.
