Help bring Chance home!

Thank you for helping support our efforts to get Chance home where he belongs.

QLD Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Rescue QLD earlier this week took a surrender of a cavalier King Charles puppy.
We are a very small family based ethical breeder of Cavaliers in QLD that keep in contact with every single puppy family forever and have a lifetime buy back garentee for all our puppies.
We bred this puppy in November 2024, he is an extremely special pup named Chance who we decided to keep due to him having health issues, being a severe runt 1/4 the size of his litter mates and with dental issues including a severe overbite which meant he could not suckle from mum at all and was bottle fed from day one. We decided early on not to sell him because of his rough start to life, and he became incredibly special to us as we fought so hard for him to survive despite being less than 100g at birth and with a less than 1% chance of survival.
At the same time we had a prior client named COURTNEY WEBER who had a puppy from one of our litters a year earlier had wanted to get a sibling for her girl and had paid for another puppy from Chance's litter, but ran into serious financial difficulties afterwards. We agreed to return the money paid despite it being contractually non refundable out of sympathy for her situation. A few months later she expressed that she still really wanted a sibling for her older dog but was having ongoing financial issues and couldn't afford the lump sum to buy one. At the time we felt sorry for her and her situation and decided to offer her Chance instead now that he was 5 months old and doing really well and his ongoing health issues were manageable. She was extremely happy and excited at this prospect and thanked us for our generosity, agreeing to take Chance as a sibling for her older dog.
We agreed that she did not need to pay for him, under the condition that if thing did not work out for any reason or if she decided she could not afford to care for him he was always to be returned to us. She was aware of the reasons we had not sold him and was well informed of what ongoing care he would need and agreed that this was no problem for her, she was just happy and grateful to get the chance with him.
Courtney expressed many times over the past 3 months since Chance left how happy she was with him and sent lots of photos and updates, we kept in contact on a weekly basis. Out of the blue this week I found out she had randomely and without any communication surrendered him to a rescue, despite not being his legal owner and our agreement (he was listed on the Facebook page of the rescue as "Rommy" possibly to hide his real identity)
This baffled me, why she would lie about how well he was doing with her and then rehome him while simultaneously telling me everything was fine? She knew how special he was to us and how much we loved him, and that we would have picked him up in a heartbeat at the first hint of there being an issue.

Unfathomable, in my opinion. I have since found out after this has all happened from a family member of hers she has Schitzophrenia and is likely having some kind of mental break. She knows she has done the wrong thing but unwilling to help, having blocked us from contacting her when we questioned why she gave him to a rescue instead of returning him home as per our agreeent.

Now comes the rescue, who I immediately contacted and explained the situation in depth. I provided extensive proof of the situation including many conversations with Courtney, details of our agreement, Chance's paperwork and hundreds upon hundreds of photos and documents proving ownership.
They initially refused to even respond to me and it was only after many days of constant calling and messages and threatening to take legal action that they finally did get in contact with me. Despite admitting they know I am the breeder, the entire whole situation and how much we love this puppy they have refused to return him, even when we have offered to pay money if needed we just want to get him home safe.
Chance is chipped and registered in our name, we have ALL paperwork. The rescue have switched it over using the surrender documents DESPITE knowing and not caring that he was not in that persons name.
The rescues actions have been dodgy from day one and I now believe they just want to sell him for more money as he is a beautiful 8 month old pup that would appeal to many potential adopters, one of which I believe they have already made arrangements with to adopt him.
As soon as they realised I was his owner they also removed the post about him from their Facebook page which is also very telling - why remove the post if you're so sure you are in the right and have the right to regime him? Destroying the evidence?

The whole situation is so devastating and disappointing and has destroyed my faith in humanity, we tried to do something nice for a woman who was going through such a hard time and got completely screwed over.
The rescue has been utterly helpful and uncaring of the situation and quite callous in their disregard for poor Chance and refusing getting him home to the family that bred and loves him despite our offers to pay for him and they fact that they know Courtney had no legal right to surrender him but essentially do not care. Their excuse for not returning him is because we "have multiple dogs already" which yes, of course we do - we are registered breeders. We have all relevant permissions, registrations and and exceedingly high standard of animal welfare due to the fact that we are a small boutique breeder and our dogs are raised in the family home and not in dog runs or cages, so that is absolutely no excuse to not return him.

I am sharing my story in hopes that the “rescue” will consider returning him to us with added public pressure. It is unquestionably the right thing to do, and I really hope they DO prove they have good intentions and do the right thing here. They have admitted that they know I am the registered breeder and am on all his paperwork, but are still refusing to allow him to come home.
I’ve attached some screenshots and have plenty more that I am happy to provide more to anyone who is interested or thinks they could help get Chance home where he belongs instead of being sold on to make money for a dodgy rescue.
