To: Preply Management

We, the undersigned tutors and supporters, call on Preply to reform its unfair payment system. Currently, tutors are not compensated for their first lesson with a new student, despite this being a mandatory requirement. This results in hundreds of hours of unpaid labor, unfairly benefiting Preply while undervaluing educators.

Furthermore, the first lesson is set at up to 50 minutes, effectively requiring nearly an hour of unpaid work per student. Many students do not continue after the first lesson, leading to widespread losses for tutors who rely on fair compensation for their expertise and time.

Additionally, Preply’s subscription model allows students to purchase lesson credits, but if they fail to schedule their lessons, these credits expire—and tutors are not paid for the time students originally committed to. This practice is both exploitative and unethical, depriving instructors of rightful earnings while Preply profits.

We demand that Preply:

• Compensate tutors for every first lesson to ensure fairness and recognition of their work.
• Allow tutors to set their own first lesson duration or at least provide a shorter unpaid option.
• Ensure tutors are paid for lessons purchased in a subscripton regardless of whether students schedule them.

Preply thrives because of its tutors. It is only fair that the platform respects their time, effort, and financial stability. We urge Preply to take immediate action to implement these changes.

Sincerely,

Alice Hafer
