Open North Street, Midhurst

The road needs opening for the sake of the businesses in Midhurst and the local roads being unable to withstand the volume of traffic now using them!

Jill Parry (Easebourne, 2023-04-30)

#603

I grew up in Midhurst

siwan Hill (London, 2023-04-30)

#604

The total lack of urgency by all the public bodies who priorities the preservation of an old building while desimmating the economy of a town. Completely wrong priorities.

Chris Jordan (Midhurst , 2023-04-30)

#605

I'm signing because I've heard from my relatives about the difficulties the town is experiencing due to the continuing road closure

Liz Hill (London, 2023-04-30)

#607

The road closure is crippling businesses in the town

Helen Hollowood (Midhurst , 2023-04-30)

#608

We need to look after the people and businesses of Midhurst. Exceptions must be made to the rules and regs around the protection of listed buildings. We must push, hard!!

Duncan Hollowood (Midhurst, 2023-04-30)

#611

It comes down to cost benefit. The cost of the disruption far outweighs the benefit of saving the Angel facade.

Jon Ward (Midhurst , 2023-04-30)

#612

This is killing the town

Nigel Mills (Midhurst , 2023-05-01)

#613

You cannot save a building at the expense of people - it is inhumane. I believe The Angel Hotel can and should be de-listed and demolished immediately so that the road can be opened in the quickest possible time.

Louise Donald (Midhurst , 2023-05-01)

#614

I love Modhust and want to save the town.

jo lewis (london, 2023-05-01)

#615

I’m getting totally fed up after what seems a lifetime, going way out of my way to just go a few miles! Total waste of petrol and time! Can’t believe the authorities seem to think it’s a good idea to keep he road closed whilst they decide the hotel’s fate??? Surely you secure it first, open the road, then make your decisions???? Totally ludicrous! Meanwhile the town is dying through lack of decisions…. It needs sorting NOW!!!!!

sarah maides (Midhur, 2023-05-01)

#618

The road being closed is killing this town. It’s been closed for far too long already. Stop stalling and making excuses and fix it.

Colin Irwin (Midhurst, 2023-05-01)

#619

I’m appalled by the crass responses be all the authorities. They exhibit a lack of care. The closure affects everyone most specially the disabled and elderly. The lack of care and imagination in solving the problems from day one has astonished me. Everyone involved should resign their posts, I include council officers and councilors and the National Park authority. It is possible that they could be sued in some group action.

Kevin Smith (Midhurst , 2023-05-01)

#620

The road closure is a major inconvinience for me as a resident of Midhurst. The diversions are not fit for purpose and the closure is having a hugely negative impact on the businesses in the local community.

Nick Morrin (Midhurst, 2023-05-02)

#622

I visit regularly and know the shops. Any added congestion puts off visitors

Seven weeks today and NOTHING has been done. Remove the listed building status on the damaged facade, tear it down along with the chimneys, and do it NOW!

Heather Older (Midhurst, 2023-05-04)

#640

Because I have to park in the Grange carpark and walk to Easebourne surgery, I am 76 it's to far for me.

Carol Martin (Midhurst, 2023-05-04)

#645

The town will die if the road is not opened soon and then there will be no need for The Angel Hotel. The priority must be the bigger picture, not conserving one wall (which can be rebuilt).

Astrid Lewis (Midhurst, 2023-05-04)

#647

It's unexceptable for midhurst to be closed for such a long time. Knock it down to save our town

Dominic Spooner (Midhurst, 2023-05-04)

#651

I live in West Lavington, Midhurst and our daily life has been severely changed. I sympathise with local businesses and have a business in Petworth that is suffering less footfall due to the horrendous state of our roads…I’ve had 2 punctures. I sympathise also with the owners and residents of The Angel though the knock on effect is bringing Midhurst and surrounding areas down enough is enough get the road open

Sara Williams (West Lavington, 2023-05-04)

#652

The road needs to be open! It’s highly affecting my day to day life along with many others.

Chelsea Martell (Midhurst, 2023-05-04)

#654

So many businesses
are struggling and this needs dealing with asap. Midhurst
is a lovely town and when i was able to drive my mother and I would drive from Chichester for a day out.

Christina Calzolari (Chichester, 2023-05-04)

#656

Concerned about the future of the town.
My commute to work has increased by 40 miles a day to avoid the road closures

Paul Humphryes (Liss, 2023-05-04)

#657

the road needs to open asap

vicky CHARLWOOD (Midhurst, 2023-05-04)

#658

I live in midhurst and also own a business in midhurst. This is crippling the local economy and destroying the lives of those living in the town and travelling to this popular area.. it has been 7 weeks and still no action only words..

Robert Wattie (Easebourne , 2023-05-04)

#660

I live locally and it makes it difficult for me to function. Shopping, visiting friends and most of all!!

Katarzyna Bakun (Petworth, 2023-05-04)

#661

I agree with the report above and I’m a resident of Midhurst and my business is on the outskirts so I can see the negative affect this is having on the town and community

Eddy Cooper (Midhurst, 2023-05-04)

#662

The impact of the road closure and lack of progress in resolving the situation is totally unacceptable to all businesses and residents. Instead of focussing on preserving a facade how about focussing on preserving the viability of this town, the livelihoods of the business owners and the sanity of the residents themselves.

Rosamund Slade (Midhurst, 2023-05-04)

#664

Midhurst shops need to be able to open so they don’t lose business and end up closing which will kill this area - there are big events coming up at Goodwood / Cowdray which will see visitors re-route and not go near, not only Midhurst but also the areas surrounding so this will also have an impact on pubs, b&bs, hotels etc

Elizabeth Yorke (Haslemere, 2023-05-04)

#667

The delays in decision making are killing our town

Ro Smith (Midhurst , 2023-05-04)

#671

I’m tired. Due to two punctures, it’s 10pm and I’ve just got home having been stranded for 7 hours! Im done in.

Petra Davey (Midhurst, 2023-05-04)

#673

This is affecting the whole of Midhurst, and no one in authority is taking it seriously. We need action now!

Anita Dunne (Midhurst, 2023-05-05)

#674

The buses need to run propeely

Rebecca Clee (Petworth, 2023-05-05)

#676

I live in Midhurst and am acutely aware of the damage this road closure is doing to our community....not only the shops and businesses but the endless issues of getting children to the local schools...and home again...minibuses collecting our local residents and getting them out and about....and the utter despair and frustration that is being felt by so many people both here and all the neighbouring towns. It's time for us to SEE SOMETHING HAPPENING!!!!

Hazel MORLEY (Midhurst, 2023-05-06)

#677

WSCC have proved their incompetence & inefficiency as is evident with their handling of the A29 closure in Pulborough.

Sharnie King (Chichester , 2023-05-06)

#682

I want to ask for 'leadership' to bring together or over rule the various authorities & partners priorities into an immediate solution and plan. My first priority:
• Start to Finish
• Make Safe
• Secure Work Site
• Divert footpath
• Open Road.
Second Priority
• retain or demolish

Doug Branson (Bosham, 2023-05-08)

#683

I’m signing because the town is dying. The street needs to reOpen to save the businesses.

Lesley Green (Midhurst , 2023-05-10)

#685

High street businesses are finding it tough enough in the current climate, if action is not swift taken Midhurst will lose its appeal and consumers will get used to going elsewhere to the detriment the towns economy.

Phillip Cook (Winscombe, 2023-05-12)

#691

It is unrealistic to save the fragile facade of the Angel Hotel to restore the original building. If the facade is saved ... how can the building be rebuilt behind with the front facade hindering facilitation of building works access? Best to knock down and rebuild copying the original. Many historic examples exist to demonstrate this is both possible and the most feasible, realistic option, not forgeting the other buildings damaged by the fire. The immemse stress being suffered by all owners affected is clearly not being taken into account by the authorities involved. Most importantly, the greater need should be to save all MIDHURST shops and other historic buildings from closing which will clearly leave a ghost town. The town is already dying.... Can't any of the official bodies assessing the overall situation see this?? Saving MIDHURST town is the greater priority. And what about the damage being caused by all main A272 traffic having to divert into surrounding lanes causing further unnecessary destruction to lane surfaces?

Victoria Anderson (Petworth , 2023-05-15)

#692

Has anyone noticed that the work due to start on Monday had not done so by Wednesday? A crane and sie office have been delivered but nobody working on site

Caroline Douglas (Midhurst, 2023-05-18)

#693

I’m severely disappointed by the apparent lack of action taken by local authorities to get the road open and protect local businesses. As for my own personal circumstances, I’m currently 39 weeks pregnant and have to drive a protracted and circuitous route to visit my midwife at Riverbank Surgery for routine appointments, a drive that takes 3 times the length of time it would have taken previously.

Lucy Foley (Midhurst , 2023-05-20)

#694

The closure of Midhurst for such a prolonged period is a disproportionate reaction. What’s the point in saving a listed building when its eventual fate, whichever way, leaves it in the middle of a town whose businesses and soul have been ripped out? There’s also the issue of the surrounding roads who have taken the strain of diverted traffic (especially now with the horse boxes coming through polo season) and are crumbling away, and the impact on local people who can’t get back and forth to work. Reopen the road immediately and bring and end to this bureaucratic idiocy.

Matthew Goring (Midhurst, 2023-05-22)

#695

Please open Midhurst High Street now! Tear the Angel down immediately and it can easily m be reproduced using the 3 D scanner the owners have taken. Get businesses trading again without delay and save the surrounding lanes from all the traffic including polo lorries. Someone is going to get seriously hurt on these diverted routes very soon. Our business in Easebourne is also suffering as we run an Airbnb so our usual guests wanting to go South towards Goodwood & the Downs are no longer booking. There is no point in saving the old buildings at the expense of everything else. Open up Midhurst now please!!

Lucy Sanders (Midhurst, 2023-05-23)

#696

The road being shut makes it so difficult for everyone to do daily tasks, or for people to visit town.

There are motorbikes driving to the goddam pavement for goodness sake.

Alex Saunders-Jones (Midhurst, 2023-05-23)

#697

Time the road was opened again, access to Midhurst causes huge amount of extra mileage petrol etc very bad for the local economy

#702

I am fed up with the amount of time taken by the authorities to make a decision whilst the town of Midhurst is suffering terribly

Martin Lester (Petworth, 2023-05-24)

#704

The situation is untenable. The community is struggling daily to live with the effects of the road closures and fire damage and businesses are visibly dying. Many will go bankrupt owing large sums of money and this will affect their lives for years to come.

Elizabeth Benn (London, 2023-05-24)

#707

Fed up with unnecessary bureaucracy stalling the road opening process, creating chaos and aggression on surrounding back lanes. Damaging businesses and preventing NHS staff getting to their patients. Knock it Down, Save our town.

Jo Goodenough (Midhurst, 2023-05-24)

#710

It's taking a huge toll on the residents and business owners, physically, financially and mentally. It's been handled insultingly badly.

Jodi Whitby (MIDHURST, 2023-05-24)

#712

My nephew has a shop in Midhurst and his business is being badly affected by what is (or is not) happening there. Action needs to be taken, quickly.

James Benn (Brussels, 2023-05-24)

#717

I used to shop all the time in Midhurst, but now that it’s pretty much closed off to everyone, and it’s so difficult to get near to the town using farm tracks, I now choose other options. It’s a great shame, this will only ruin shopkeepers and retailers in Midhurst.

Nick Robson (Petworth, 2023-05-24)

#718

I care about what happens to the community of Midhurst

Sandra Marynissen (Niagara On The Lake, 2023-05-25)

#720

My life is daily made more difficult because of the lack of a proper road from Petworth to Midhurst. Presently there are only two one-way lanes for all traffic.

Anna Luttman-Johnson (Petworth, 2023-05-25)

#724

I live in Midhurst and have spent the last 60 or so going backwards and forwards to my kids school I Easebourne. It’s a 1.8 mile trip one way and my 7 year old is exhausted…but it’s not just about me. Every business owner in Midhurst at this point is hanging on by a thread!

Lynn Jeynes (Midhurst, 2023-05-25)

#725

I'm a professional dog walker in midhurst and the road closure is having a terrible effect on my business and my own mental health

Charlotte Watson (Midhurst , 2023-05-27)

#729

Too difficult to attend the polo at Cowdray Park until road reopens.

Stella Coady (Southampton, 2023-05-30)

#730

The delay is excessive and the detours are lengthy, badly signposted and via unsuitable road

Kevin Moore (Fareham, 2023-05-30)

#731

The council and Nat Trust are both disgraceful and lazy in failing to get to work and get tge A286 open. Its a moment of truth and they have failed.

matthew coulter (haslemere, 2023-05-31)

#733

Delay is crippling for all of us

Shaun Evans (West Dean, 2023-06-03)

#734

I think it is a disgrace that the road has been closed for five months when one way traffic lights could have helped to keep North Street open whilst decisions about the future of The Angel are in limbo. Not only is the detour dangerous on one way lanes that are very narrow but also business is being crippled. This cannot be allowed to continue

Vanessa Evans (West Dean, 2023-06-03)

#736

It is now almost 3 months since the fire and closure of the main road through midhurst - businesses in the town have suffered badly and motorists using the road as a route to Chichester and other towns have been hugely affected. The whole thing smacks of too many groups involved in the decision making process and general incompetence.

Jill Cheesman (Godalming, 2023-06-09)

#737

I’m really fed up with the continuing blockade of Midhurst. I fairly frequently use this road to get to Petworth nd Brighton
The diversion signs are hopeless and even trying the lanes around Iping resulted in a mark on my car and the lane was closed further along. Extra hour added on due to having to divert around Arundel and Broadwater near Worthing.
I used to pause for a break and shopping before but shall try Liphook next time!
How much longer?

Simon Moore (Whitchurch , 2023-06-15)

#738

Midhurst is suffering and the various agencies involved don't appear to be acting in the town's best interests.

Robert Stratton-Brown (Midhurst, 2023-06-18)

#740

The town is dying.
A single Lane could be opened, protected by hoardings, to make a circuit with Hollist Lane.

Lucinda Davis (Midhurst, 2023-06-18)

#741

The town has suffered, the protection of Midhurst is essential, its people’s livelihoods that are important, not chimneys and bricks. I love our history and heritage but people have to come first.

Prue Manolescue (Easebourne, 2023-06-18)

#743

I feel knocking this building down or what is left would benefit community. I don't feel it was a particularly attractive building. Build was nice flats for local young people.
