The informal settlement provides cover for criminal activity. Hygiene is a real issue and human faeces is commonly found all obet the place. The living conditions are horrendous. Even if low cost housing werr erected that would be better.

We are proud of our area, devoting personal time and resources to keep it a welcoming environment for all who live there but the squatters are firstly breaking the law by setting up house there, they have no sanitation so they’re polluting the river and the area around it. I expect the ruling party to uphold the interests of the rate payers in their area

This is a health risk, safety risk and a noise disturbance. The river is probably used for sewerage, the number of people diagnosed with bilharzia in the neighbourhood is shocking (dogs play in river on walks). They used to burn plastic, which they are trying to stop unsuccessfully. I personally do not feel safe walking/ running through Field and study park on my own.

I feel a safe environment is important and as an avid user of the Braamfontein Spruit the area in consideration has been a long standing dangerous area. The municipality needs to step in to provide a material recycling facility for the recyclers to collect and sort their materials in a safe and environmentally sound manner. The material sorting work is being undertaken informally with non-recyclable waste being burnt in the area near the river and is an environmental hazard.

Christopher O'Donovan (Johannesburg, 2020-11-23)

As a regular dog walker there is a feeling of insecurity unless we walk in a crowd. The amount of rubbish piling up on the other side of the river is appalling and as a result the river and its banks is in a dreadful state, an eyesore and impacts on the birdlife negatively.

Cherry MacIldowie (Sandton, 2021-02-05)

I don't like the river to be poisoned because of all the wildlife such as fish and geese and ducks which are also poisoned. Plastic waste should not be burned as it contaminates the atmosphere and nature and is posionous. There is heavy smoke over the park at times from where the people live making it very unpleasant to walk at those times. I have heard gun shots from time to time. I would like to feel safe in the park. It is unfortunate as the squatters have never personally threatened me although I have often been in the park late or very early. They seem to mind their own business and come to the main area of the park to collect water in buckets from the municipal tap near the entrance to the park. Sometimes they play their radios loudly enough for thr noise to travel through the park which isn't nice. In principle I don't have any problem with squatters in the park but the lack of ablution facilities, burning of plastic and throwing waste into the river as well as the smoke and intermittent playing of radios does bother me. I was told they also wash cars sometimes of rich people using municipal water. I dont think that is right as rich people should not now abuse the situation and they should go to a proper car wash and not steal municipal water. If thr squatters could be accommodated reasonably and for example portable toilets put there and they do not burn plastic and leave toxic waste around and are obliged to follow park rules regarding playing radios like other park users then I don't have a problem with them living in the park at all. I go to the park to draw and I am thankful to have a place to go to where I feel I am safe and it is nice to share it with everyone. It's just unpleasant when there is smoke and noise from them or sounds like gunshots coming from that direction.

Maria Wilson (Johannesburg, 2021-06-12)
