I am proud of the heritage walton county holds. We have a wonderful group of citizens and we refuse to allow anyone to come in and destroy it.

I believe that history should be preserved in its entirety, taught truthfully, and used to create a "more perfect union". I believe that historical figures should not be judged by current standards, and that their accomplishments and contributions to establishing our nation should be acknowledged and appreciated. It should also be recognized that they were human, and lived according to the standards of their time, even as they sought change and improvement.
And, I believe that special interest groups should not be allowed to impose their opinions on the majority. Change should be done in an orderly, legal fashion, and not through violence and intimidation. All citizens should have a voice in such decisions, by the election process.

Jean Linder (Monroe , 2020-06-27)

These monuments are all of our history. Some good , some bad. Either way they teach and remind us of our past ancestors who loved and fought for every right that each of us have. Let's our children and grandchildren have that same right to be able to see for themselves the fight that the USA has had to go thru to get where we are today. Because if not as it is said, "History WILL repeat itself."

Wanda Schroth (Oxford, 2020-06-27)

I’m signing this because it’s important to keep the historical remembrance for the future. Tearing down history isn’t going to solve anything. People have to change because of our history but never should we erase it.

I am a native of Walton county and it pains me to see our history dismantled! History is what has made us who we are today, how will we learn not to repeat it if we don’t keep our monuments And statues as reminders of how NOT to act

It’s apart of history. It represents the men and women who lost their lives. Are you going to quit teaching history in school too because people are sensitive?

I believe you can't scream equal right's by tearing down or demolishing anything, and everything that means so much to so many, but turn around, and let all the other parties Memorial's stand...How is that equal??? the fair way would atleast be a vote for the residents of the County!!!

One small faction should not be permitted to dictate what happens to our history. Many Walton County families suffered the loss of loved ones in this war and this should never be forgotten or minimized.

Enough is enough. Tire of hearing I’m offended by this, I’m offended by that, The monuments, the system, my color, the police are keeping me oppressed, yet this same people are the ones that are not doing anything to improve their life’s style. I am a Hispanic male that grew up in a very poor situation in El Salvador. No electricity and no running water. Fish, hunt and farm to be able to have 3 meals a day. I work since I was 7years old until God bless my family and we were able to get a green card yes we came here the legal way, at 12 years old. I went to school learned the language and as I grew older I learned work skills. Now I’m very proud to be an American citizen by choice, home owner and making over 6 figures a year. The monuments don’t offend me because I’m not a sheep, I would love if our community leaders would save the monuments to show our future generations the history of this country and put a stop to this nonsense. What’s next the illegal immigration will say that they are offended because they don’t have voting rights and we will just give it to them?

I believe in preserving history in it’s entirety. It may be ugly and embarrassing but it can be a symbol of how we have grown. So many are wanting to erase it because it’s a reminder of the hate and pain of many. They are focused only on the negative. We should focus on what we, as a society, have accomplished. It’s important to remember the history so we can plan for the future.

Lisa Clark (Monroe, 2020-06-28)
